FlytE
I got quite excited about it when i read the cga news artical as im toying with the idea of a dedicated farm.... but was gutted to find that it doesnt support vray. I know brazil is really good (some say better than vray) and im not disparaging it in any way, but i just dont understand why the support was given for it and not vray, especially given the massive community following for vray. Crazy Homeless Guy
could you explain more, i am not sure what you are reffering to. i know it has something to do with the main page news article, but i see no mention of vray or brazil in that link. AJLynn
Why wouldn't you be able to use Vray on it? It's just a high spec PC.
FlytE
If you go to the rendering section it lists the renderers that are compatible with it. Inherently these kind of hardware systems are often associated with a specific third-party renderer, sometimes maybe a couple. 3DBOXX 8300 has its own list of renderers it supports and and there is no mention of vray either there or in the renderers section. I didnt read anywhere that it says you can use any renderer you like...
Crazy Homeless Guy
keep in mind that the 3dBOXX 8300 and the RenderBOXX are different products. if you are clicking on the right hand column, where it says 'Render Nodes', then the site is taking you to a page for a rack server, and not a workstation. ...but as AJ said, the 8300 supports vray, and i imagine the renderBOXX does alos, even though it is not listed. i guess it could have some funky thing installed with it, but i doubt it. FlytE
Ah yes sorry I see where I have got confused here (again.... its been a mad week!). Still, would be interesting to see if the renderboxx does support vray. I think I will write to them and see.

Still, would be interesting to see if the renderboxx does support vray. I think I will write to them and see. i gurantee they do... when you think of it, Vray is nothing other than a software like MS Word that gets installed and used.... the hardware doesn't care what's installed no matter if its a 3d package, a text editor, a game, or a rendering engine... it just wants to run it ~ a "one trick pony" if you will:D email ecaracappa@boxxtech.com
FlytE
I hear what you are saying, but I know for a fact that some hardware IS specific to 3rd party software. The ArtVPS renderdrive only uses the renderpipe 3rd party renderer (renderman technology). It cannot be used in conjunction with ANY other 3rd part rendering software. So as much as I would like to believe that boxx rendernodes can use vray, with no mention of unlimited 3rd party renderer compatibility and definitely no mention of vray, I would feel more comfortable hearing it from the horses mouth before I buy.... The guy is phoning me today, ill let you know what he says.
AJLynn
Do you need a guarantee from every PC manufacturer that every PC your office buys runs every piece of software you have? ArtVPS is specialty hardware - not a PC, no X86 compatible chip, can't boot Windows. This Boxx is just a high-spec PC being marketed for being good for 3D work. Vray will run on any newish PC that runs newish Windows.
FlytE
I am no longer talking about the boxx, or more specifically the 3DBOXX 8300. Im talking about renderBOXX render nodes which appear to be, and appear to work, as a piece of speciality hardware. So the answer to your question is no, I do not look for a guarantee with every pc I buy.
AJLynn
Oh, those things. Those are just rackmount Windows PCs with AMD/Intel chips - you can run just about anything on them, but you've got whatever convenience/inconvenience comes from using rackmounts. Given the inconveniences you get with Vray's current distributed implementation you'd want a good remote management setup - they've discussed this a lot on the Chaosgroup forums. I think there are some people here using rackmount nodes - anybody want to add?
FlytE
This tends to be my first port of call, but yeah I think i will check out chaosgroup and see what they say... thanks
