Odunayo
Hello all, I am just getting into 3d Modeling. I would like some advice on making a transition from 2d AutoCAD to 3d Modeling in 3d Max. I am comfortable using xrefs, layers, shortcut keys and managing files and file names in AutoCAD. I would like to know some basic steps to take Architectural 2d plans and elevations from AutoCAD to 3d Max. Do I xref them into 3d Max and trace the 2d image. Or do I use extrusions from the imported CAD file. Also what settings should I use when importing an AutoCAD file into 3d Max (translating layers, blocks, and lines etc)How are layers used in Architectural models? For AutoCAD 2d drawings I use an elemental layer name system. What are the most commonly used shortcut keys and tools used for Architectural Modelling. How is xrefs used in 3d Max for Architectural ModellingWhat is the most efficient way to model and render and Architectural Model? In AutoCAD I used lines, polylines and splines. For 3d Max do I model the surface or should I use solids bearing in mind that I will be applying materials later. intero_ua
I think the best thing for you at this stage will be "Architectural Visualization" book from Brian L. Smith, which will give you very powerfull jumpstart on your way to success. It is new and fresh, highlights many important things you need to know. I'do not know what electronic store do you prefer, but if you are in US i suggest Vismasters because it will be fastest and cheapest way to get this book. http://commerce.vismasters.com/catalog/viewproduct.aspx?product=4207
Michael Emo
To begin with, I'd use the tutorials that come with Max. I think that many newbies (and the experienced) fail to remember that most design programs these days come with tutorials that were written and put together by the programmers themselves. So, typically they are a great place to start for learning. For Max 8 go to Help>Tutorials. This will go far to explain the basics to you of AEC modeling techniques including the importing of CAD files into max, layer attributes, etc. -Michael
antonio_frias
I agree 100% with Michael, that's how I started out in max. I also tryed out free video tutorials found on the web ( for exemple http://www.3dbuzz.com etc..)
