Munz
can you use vray with back burner? Has anyone sent up a render farm for vray and if so any suggestions or advice? munz
DavidR
Yes, we use Vray with Backburner on our XP-64 renderfarm, and it works perfectly. BTW, any renderer that launches Max first (Brazil, finalRender, mental ray, etc) will work with Backburner (I know some can run standalone, too) -just install your apps normally and you're good to go. Munz
Thanks David, do you have any recommendations for the type of hardware you use for your renderfarm?
e-YELLOWCABS.COM
hello, does vray and max work well under xp64? i do not think it improves anything, do i?
Clifton Santiago
@Munz: Vray works fine with backburner. If you are rendering with certain methods such as IR/LC, you will want to render and save the lighting pass first, then use for the image. IR/QMC however does not usually need a pre-pass. Just render to split scanlines and let each machine that participates calculate its own lighting pass. There should be no banding. @e-YELLOWCABS.com: Yes, Vray and Max work well with XP 64. They work even better actually. Vray is, or can be, a memory hog and of course XP 64 allows one to use all available memory in one application. As I'm sure you know, 32 bit windows only allows a maximum of 2 GB per app, unless you have the 3 gig switch enabled.
Munz
Is Vray a 64 bit application? Have others used it would xp pro 64 and 4 gigs of ram? I want to make sure I will get my moneys worth if I upgrade to this.
Clifton Santiago
I don't think it is native yet, but neither is Max 8.3. It will still use up to 4 gb ram anyway with xp 64. After it is native, it will be able to use more.
Thablanch
Munz: Vray does run beta without problem on 64 bit as a standalone. ( I did try it,but do not use it as a production tool) I do not know what are Chaos plans in order to accomodate Max / other software for 64 bits in the future. On 64 bit farm, it does take advantage of all the ram aviable, in our case 4Gig

Does each participating machine needs it's own Vray floating license server?
DavidR
Does each participating machine needs it's own Vray floating license server? NO, 1 license server is what we use for our 8 nodes and 8 workstations.
