renderfarm spec's?

Recommended Posts

I am going to start slowly building a renderfarm and would like any advise that others have. I am going to use max 8 and vray. I am planning on buying one rendernode now and more in the future as I grow. I am starting my own rendering business, so it is just me now, so I need a renderfarm to send images off to, so I can continue to work on my workstation. here is what I am planning on starting with. Again any recommendations would be apreciated from those that have gone through this before.

Excellent setup, you're going to be very happy with those machines. My only recommendation would be to up the RAM to 4gb -- the RAM is divided amongst the processor cores when rendering, so each process will be limited to 512mb. For us that's not enough to do the job on heavily populated animations, though it's totally dependent on how intensive your max scenes are.

Best of luck!

Shaun

will Vray even support 4 gigs of RAM, I know 3d studio max is only a 32 bit program, is Vray a 64 bit program. I wonder if it will be of any value to get 2 extra gigs of ram if vray can only support 2.

Does anyone have information on this?

vray is not 64 bit yet but I'd still go with 4gb. Like Shaun mentioned the worst thing to happen to a rendernode is running out of ram.

fwiw ~ I have a boxx... great machine and good people to deal with : )

Should I get the regular XP pro or x64? Have you worked with x64?

I haven't upgraded to x64 yet but it's on my shortlist of things to do ~ I have 4gb of ram sitting in my workstation just waiting for it:D

If you're talking about your nodes, I guess if you went with x64 now, it would save you from buying an x64 OS down the road (since everything is going to 64bit) and you'll be able to make use of all the ram Max and Vray will allow. Just make sure there are other folks running Vray farms with X64 before you decide.
