4 Cpu Dual Core Amd 270 Opteron

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I Intend To Buy 4 Cpu Pc Amd 270 Dual Core...does It Render Vray 8 Buckets? On Windows Server 2003?

In my opinion, a quad socket (made with 8xx series opterons :p ) is not worth the money, the mobo's themselves are $1000) ... instead, invest in a faster workstation with perhaps 2 - Opteron 280's or 285's, a great graphics card and build an opteron rendernode or two with the rest of the money.

I'm not sure if V-Ray works on Server '03, but you're right in knowing that you do need a server OS to make use of all those cores. also know that the more processors you put on a motherboard the less efficient it becomes... as an example, each Opteron 280/880 is made of 2 - 2.4ghz cores but the total output of the system is not 2.4 x 8(the # of cores) = 19.2ghz because of the little devil known as diminishing returns.

cheers

Tecton3d is right about diminishing returns and expense. Vray uses all available cores very efficiently (we have dual Opteron 275 render farm = 4 cores per machine, on Server 2003-64), but you can buy 2 dual nodes (maybe 3) for the same money and use DR to render 1 image if neccessary.
