Viz Competition 2006.

Recommended Posts

Having just looked throught the nominees for the 2006 award for still images,

i am a little suprised that not one of them jumped out and WOWED me...!! or is it just me ?

i heard their were around 2000 images submitted....

it would also be interesting to hear from the judges how each was judged, and maybe i provide a better appreciation of these images..

Yeah, I've gotta say, I don't know whose call that was but I am shocked that WETA was included. They're going to win an Oscar for their work on Kong, why do they need an award from CGArchitect? Weird...

By that same token, I wish my work was nominated right alongside WETA! "Oh, who did you lose that award to? The King Kong people? Man, tough break..." ;-)

Check out these sites to see the nominated animations:

http://www.smoothe.co.uk/

http://www.uniform.net/

http://www.bhaa.com.cn/

And of course you can always see the "Architecture" animation from King Kong on the DVD. STill kind of upset about that nomination....

I am really impressed by Uniform. They are taking architecture visualizations to a different level. The stills are nice. I think Neoscape kind of spoiled us with the winning shot last year.

Sorry guys, I should have streaming videos of the animations soon. I wanted to get the nomimees up as soon as I could, but I need to get the animations down to a resonable size before I put them up. Some of them are 600 MB.

what is this Viz competition?!?!!

am I getting it confused with the Viz Challenge?... if so, then where can I see the submissions?

the deadline closed about 2 weeks ago. We advertised the hell out of it on the site and in the newsletter for about 2 months.

This is seperate from the AVC 2006, which also just ended a few weeks ago.

I think the still images are excellent. However, I'm dissapointed that the judging criteria and the resulting nominees' work all celebrate photoreal type imagery. Don't get me wrong, I would love to be able to produce that quality work, but it's just a bit narrow, especially for a competition.

There were not many, if any, non-photoreal submissions if I recall.

Just so everyone knows how the judging worked I'll do a quick break down.

I personally went though all of the 900+ images and 60+ animations that were submitted and narrowed the field down until all of the image and animations were on equal ground in terms of quality and artistic interpretation. That resulted in about 300 image and 40 animations. All of those images and animations were sent to the judges and they then narrowed the selection down to 30 images and 10 animations. They then scored each in two categories. Techical and Artistic for a total score of 20.

I took all of the total scores from the five judges and totaled the scores for every image for a total possible score of 100. The top 5 images and animations from both categories resulted in the nominees and the highest scoring image and animation will be annouced as the winners at the awards ceremony in Boston.

Ideally this type of judging woud be done with all of the judges in one place, but that simply is not a realistic option.

The uniform material is excellent, especially the animations.

I to think the stills are a bit weak generally, especially the bathroom and

that chinese temple thing which is cheesy and weird allthough well executed.

A bit dissapointing generally.

I guess that means we all had a disappointing 2005 then. :-( Agreed on the bathroom, I feel studies like that showcase the render engine more than the artist (very stale, but subtley beautiful). And the Chinese submission lacks any separation between the foreground and middleground, which makes the buildings behind blend in with the one whose yard we're standing in. It's confusing, which isn't good archviz.

At least Neoscape won't sweep the whole competition this time. ;-)

Not to downplay the other work, but how do any of those compare to what Weta did on Kong!? They are on a whole nother level, in terms of quality, budget, resources, not to mention they are an oscar winning effects studio!

If their is any possibility to see the top 20 or even 50 images that would be a great idea.

Another thought would be to have an public style vote, say one vote per cgarchitect member......!!!!!!!

Our judges did a very good job and it was a lot of work for them in a very short period of time. I do not want to undermine their work or their decisions by holding another vote. All of our judges are very talented artists in their own right, and I do not for one minute want to downplay the fact that they DO know what they are doing. As an aside when we had the public votes for the AVC, the decision was ALWAYS identical to the judges we had.

I would like to see all works (or top 50?) if possible. think many works are great. :)

We will not be posting anything other than the nominees. Again the people who were nominated, were done so for a reason and I do not want to water down the fact that they were chosen. It's an honor to have been selected as a nominee in this competition and I think the nominees deserve the exposure and credit.

There's only so much I can say here since I was one of the judges for this year's 3D Awards. But I've done enough judging and crit'ing to have some general thoughts that address these comments.

How are we supposed to compete with Weta Digital for best animation?

Do a better job of portraying an architectural subject than they do. Budget helps, but talent and creativity can shine on a simple project, too. Do not assume judges are suckers for expensive work. Certainly high-budget work, and works showing exciting projects can sway people--judges included--but the job of a judge is to see past the show and look for the substance.

I to think the stills are a bit weak generally, especially the bathroom and that chinese temple thing

Then have another look at those pieces. Do they manage to find a presentation technique that best features the subject? Are they good uses of the technique chosen, well composed, well executed? Do you understand what they are and how you would use/experience them? Are they deceptively simple? Remember the saying "the hardest part is making it look easy". Also let's not get into a mindset that says traditional Chinese architecture or a bathroom or a doghouse or a chain restaurant cannot possibly be good enough to win an international competition. When you think that way you no longer have a meaningful competition.

From the standpoint of judging these awards I can tell you that it is really hard to narrow down the entries to a mere few. There are SO MANY great pieces, so many deserving of recognition. But there is a process of judging and there are enough judges to even out the 'slant' that one person may have (like me, for example).

Thanks Ernest for posting. But I just don't see how WETA was portraying an architectural subject. I understand that they had to make the empire state building look uber-realistic...but wasn't the focus on the giant gorilla on the top of it? I think your comments make me even more confused why you chose that animation. When you take a look at Uniforms animation, they make architecture exciting to watch. They didn't need Naomi Watts and Bi-Planes....

I do not think Jeff needs to get defensive of the judges etc,

I am sure they do a good job with the work submitted, and their integrity is not in question.

This thread is just an interesting debate on this year's nominees and maybe comments about future awards....
