Devin Johnston
I want to find out if Max will run on Windows 2003 Server X64 Enterprise edition.

Devin Johnston
I called AutoDesk and asked them and the geniuses told me that it wouldn’t run on any X64 system. When I told him that I've been running it on Windows XP64 for the past year he back tracked and said that it was just unsupported. It really makes me mad when they get twerps to answer the phones on a tech support line that are reading the info off of a screen and don't actually know anything. Ernest Burden III
I called AutoDesk How much was that Max licence?
DavidR
Yes, we run Max7 on Server 2003-64 and it's fine. We've had no issues with it, and also use Vray and mental ray through Backburner. It's fine, but I can't promise all your plug-ins will work, though they probably will.
Devin Johnston
How much was that Max licence? What do you mean Ernest? Thanks David, that makes me feel better. Just out of curiosity why are you using this OS?
DavidR
Just out of curiosity why are you using this OS? It's the OS for our renderfarm. Our IT dept. was thinking of XP-64 but decided that 2003-64 would be worth it because server software gets much better support from MS than desktop software. As others have said, XP-64 and Server-64 are built from the same kernel, so it's up to you -both should be fine.
Ernest Burden III
What do you mean Ernest? You were frustrated with customer support that wasn't very knowledgeable about their own product. I'm pointing out that Max is not one of the cheaper solutions, so they have no excuse for that example of second-rate customer support. It's doubly bad since you are looking to expand. It was as much a sales call as a support call, and they should be smart enough to see that.
Devin Johnston
Good point, I guess after experiencing Next Limits customer service my expectations are pretty low.

Verma
Max 8 currently runs on x64 OS but is not officially supported by Autodesk. What that means is if you encounter any problems running it on an unsupported OS, autodesk will not provide you any help. Hopefully this will not be an issue when max 9 is out. Just wait till next month to find out. BTW, just curious to know about your experience with next limit?
