Devin Johnston
Ok I'm trying to figure out which processor is going to give me the best performance, there are a couple of things on each processor that I'm having trouble with. These are the chips: Opteron 880 2.4Ghz Athlon 4800+ 2.4Ghz On the Athlon it has 2Ghz hyper transport technology speed as opposed to the Opterons 1Ghz. Basically what does this do and why is it twice as fast on the Athlon? The Athlon has 1 MB of L2 cache, the Opteron has 2 MB of L2 cache, so which one is better? Which one is better in terms of overall speed and performance?
STRAT
am i right in thinking the opteron is a dual processor where as the athlon is single?
Devin Johnston
Yes, that's how they are marketed and I'd either be getting 10 single processor athlon mahcines or 5 dual processor opteron machines.
AJLynn
They'll end up being about the same in speed. Choose based on price, what you think will work best on your farm and whether you want to put 10 machines in the office or 5.
pailhead
But why the 880 model?
Devin Johnston
Just trying to get an equal comparison by using processors with the same GHz speed. My hope was that the Athlons were a little faster because of the faster HT speed but I guess not.
AJLynn
It doesn't turn out to make that big a difference in rendering, and with the difference in cache I think it would even out. There might be a very small difference but not enough to override other factors.
pailhead
Comparing athlons to single core opterons makes sense if you want to overclock. Opterons are cheaper and they should overclock better because they have their initial stock voltage lower than athlons.
AJLynn
Wait, I thought we were talking about 5 dual-socket dual-core Opterons vs. 10 single-socket dual-core Athlons. And, correct me if I'm wrong Devin, but I never got the impression that overclocking was being considered... though there's plenty of info out there for overclocking AMDs. Devin Johnston
NO there is no over clocking, this is a standard system setup like you said. It looks like well go with the Athlon systems; they look like they give the most bang for the buck. Thanks for the help!
Harjeet Singh
ATHLON X2, dual core, should be considerable!
Arquitrad
Why not Athlon X2 4600? The rendering speed differences between 4600 and 4800 are too small to be significant.
