It depends on what you're rendering. Mostly, you want to limit yourself to using clipmapped 2D tree and plant images when rendering both exteriors and interiors, primarily because they are low polygon and don't eat up your memory and rendertimes. But images have certain limitatations that force one to switch to 3D trees and plants and most significant of those limitations are a) you can't effectively use 2D images for animations; especially when your camera is moving and b) 2D images are not very conducive to doing top/bird's eye view renders. So in both these cases one is forced to use 3D trees and plants, whether it's interior or exterior.

Your best bet for sources are:

For 2D plants and trrees:- Marlin collections (http://www.marlinstudios.com/), Total textures (http://www.3dtotal.com), got3d (http://www.got3d.com/) and there's also always RPCs (http://www.archvision.com/).

For 3Dplants and trees and are various options which typically tend to require you to install a plugin to use them:-

Onyx collections (http://www.onyxtree.com/)

Speedtree collections (http://www.speedtree.com/)

Xfrog collections (http://www.xfrogdownloads.com/greenwebNew/products/productStart.htm)

There are obviously others out there, but these are some of the more popularly used ones that are compatible with most render plugins.

You might also be able to find free trees and plants of the various collections on the net if you do a search., but some of the softwares (Xfrog, and Onyx, I believe) allow you to "grow" and develop your own collection.

....hope this helps
