V-ray with AutoDesk VIZ2006SP1

Hi there,

This is my first ever post. We are planning to buy V-ray Advanced renderer very soon. I downloaded the Vray Demo 1.47.18 and was trying to get the feel of it. While installing the plug-in, it came up with a dialog box mentioning AutoDesk VIZ 2006 is version 7 and V-ray may not function properly.

I am working with an Architectural firm. I am 3D visualizer. We use AutoDesk VIZ 2006. We use RPC frequently in the scene. I know V-ray supports RPC, but some how I am not getting the results. Some times in the first pass it renders the RPC, textures and after the 3rd pass the screen starts showing full black. After all the passes are over, it renderes the scene but without or ghosted RPC and with few textures.

I need to decide in this week whether to buy VRay or not. Please help me. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Thank you,

Santosh

Post your questions for RPC's at http://www.archvision.com using their online tech report.

I have posted 3 queries on there, and for 2 of them they rang me at work within a couple of hours, and went thru the problems there and then..!! Now thats what I call tech support.:D

Try changing your Maximum Depth in Raytracer Global Parameters to 5.. I think thats what worked for me.. Give that a go first.. also, take note of this..:

Pertains to Product: 3D Studio MAX / Autodesk VIZ

RPC Version Effected: All

Description:

Currently there is an incompatibility issue with V-Ray Advanced and RPC Objects for Viz 2006 and Viz 2007. Due to this issue RPCs will only partially render.

Status: In Development

Resolution:

Currently there is not a solution for this.

from the archvision site..

Hi Andy,

Thank you for reply. I tried the your way by changing the Raytracer Depth to 5. The RPC problem still remains, but atleast it is rendering the textures that it use to skip before. As per your advice I already posted the problem on the archvision site. Thanks again for reponding with the solutions.

Thank you,

Santosh

Just FYI. The missing textures problem is not becasue of the raytrace parameters. There is an incompatability issue between Vray Advanced and Viz 2006 & 2007. The only work around it (to my knowledge) is by using standard materials when you use image maps in the diffuse slot. They may have a fix for this but I'm not sure.

There are still problems with viz 2006, that's sad...

Fortunately, this is not true. The workaround for viz 2006 and (from what I've read - viz 2007) is to install version 1.46.15, which you can get by emailing the chaos group. I use viz 2006 and have never had a problem with missing textures. The rpc's render just fine when I don't have too many in the scene. It's off and on with the rpc's.

Using standard materials will increase render times, by how much, I don't know. 1.5 is coming so we'll see if they've fixed the bug with viz 2006.

Another workaround for the rpc's is to render them seperately with the scanline renderer and comp them in. They'll look the same because they're not effected by the gi, unless your using the parking lot cars.
