Brian Smith
For those that saw the post that I made yesterday, which has since been removed, I would like to apologize for making the post. I am not sorry that the member was banned and I think it was appropriate, because by badmouthing me I believe he was badmouthing the integrity of the competition and Jeff's decision to select me as a judge. But I should not have made the post public and for that I apologize. When I asked Jeff what he made on the email, he made the decision to ban the member and was OK with me making the post. I nonetheless should not have done so and I should have kept it private.

Gus_Rayvus
I never saw the post. From imgumbydammit post, he emailed you to "bag on your work" and Jeff banned him? That seems odd, Jeff banned someone because he emailed you saying your work wasn't good? There must be more to this?
William Alexander
Brian, I read the post... an apology speaks to your integrity above the obvious frustration. WDA
mskin
Yeah, there must be more to this (personal attack or something?). Good for you brian for sticking up for yourself, as far as im concerned that requires no apology, but, why supress his criticism.... let the forum police itself and let open discussion prevail.... personally... i disagree whith the ban, but i don't know the story. ps... after looking at your web site brian, i can hardly see room for improvement. good stuff and looking forward to the terrain tutorial. Brian Smith
Thanks Marek, It was an email someone sent my office out of the blue criticizing my being selected as a DVC judge based on my portfolio. I can't recall ever being so upset with an email and I just wanted retribution. I sent it to Jeff and he made the decision to ban and OK'd the post. It was childish but I was so upset I made a rash decision to make the post public. I took a lot of heat from dozens of members that saw the post, saying that I was the unprofessional one and needed to grow thicker skin. It took me a day to realize that they were right and that it was a mistake to air my dirty laundry. After 16 years in the military and several deployments, I actually have developed quite thick skin, but no one has ever criticized my work before and I guess I was having a bad day and wasn't prepared for it. mahorela
I didn't see the original post but it must have been some bagging. I guess it's easy for me to imagine you saying, who is this guy? I am Brian Smith, master visualizer, 3d teacher and author. From my perspective, if I were Brian Smith I would remark something about the person being a pimple on my butt. But I guess that even the greatest of us can be sensitive about that which we care most about and I for one don't blame you one bit for your response. I think that under the circumstances, noone has the right to tell you that you shouldn't be a judge or anything else. He deserves to be banned and his is the attitude that I for one am keen to be rid of on this, a very helpful and excellent forum.
Fran
Brian, this can't have been easy for you and FWIW you get a thumbs up from me. That guy was just a disgruntled competition entrant who registered here in order to enter and then took his anger out on you when he wasn't accepted. Even though his work was good, and I can understand his disappointment, it was the wrong thing to do and Jeff was right to ban him. And when such email activity is directly related to a CGA function in which you were acting in an official capacity, it is Jeff's problem too. I had a guy email me to tell me my homepage looked like someone was going to hear a poetry reading (paraphrased) and needed more pizzazz. I didn't reply, but thought to myself, "Poetry Corner? Darn right!"
santiago
I guess this point may already have been made, but it's worth reiterating. If someone of this forum is attacked by another forum member, but by email, not in the actual forum, then it should be taken care of amongst them two, there's no need to make a private matter like that go public. On the other hand, if someone attacks here on the forum, that's an entirely different matter. I haven't seen any of these posts, but I'm really glad it's been resolved. Justin Hunt
I followed the thread and must admit that it was only when Jeff made his point of view known did I understand why the banning was in order. My Apologies to you Brian for questioning your intergrity and professionalism, once I had more info I understood your standpoint, even if your call for him to be banned from other forums was over the top. John Dollus
Getting in late to this but was the work being criticized even done by you, Brian? People need to realize that not every piece on a website is done by the owner of a company.
Brian Smith
John, The majority of the work on our site is a group effort between many people. I haven't completed a project soley by myself since I was freelancing about 4 years ago. Whether it is just me or not though, I think criticizing someone else's work is extremely rude. Even if I had only been doing 3D for a few days and all I could do was a few primitives, it's still rude. If he had a problem with me being a judge, Jeff is the only one that should have known about it. And it was when I realized this myself that I realized that I shouldn't have made the post. FlytE
I never saw the post Brian but I wouldnt be so hard on yourself. I may be relatively new to this forum in the big scheme of things but I am no stranger to online posting.... I would estimate over a selection of forums and over a couple of usernames, that I have posted somewhere in the region of 12,000+ posts in my time. I have also been the leader of several online communities mainly in gaming circles and have come across many people over the internet etc. It would be fair to say that I have met and had to deal with more idiots online than I care to remember and turned the other cheek to almost as much. But by god sometimes there just comes a time when you get uncontrollably defensive because you are unfairly attacked, even if its normally uncharacteristic of you. I mean you were consciencious enough to run it past jeff who gave you the ok.... so it cant be all THAT bad can it?
