Justin Hunt
Considering my old boss (Robert Graves) is very happy with it, I don't think that it will be dissapointing at all. Rob really knows his stuff. JHV
AJLynn
I'll reserve judgement until I see mental ray 3.5 (and compare it to Vray) - since I'm unlikely to be running Windows64 any time soon, it looks like the mr upgrade is the most interesting thing in it for me. Geoffc
I was crossing my fingers for 64 bit support, since my new rig on order is shipping with win64. We'll see though. What I wonder though, is if vray 1.5 will care about the 64 bit environment or not.
Justin Hunt
just watching the new features videos, I am wetting myself. http://www.cgarchitect.com/news/newsfeed.asp?nid=3306 What they are showing is going to give Vray a run for its money, heee heee heee heee . Msamir
I dont use MR but the feature video made me want to try it.
plastic
nothing interesting for archiviz...mental ray 3.5 for those who use it. but if the viewport speed really improved dramatically, it will be worth it.
AJLynn
That mental ray video has impressed the hell out of me. It's meant to do that, of course, but it looks like they've finally put a lot of effort into making the Max/mr interface more usable. The sun/sky system isn't necessary but it's nice to have, and the possibilities of faster glossies, automatic edge fillets and an architectural shader system that's for mr are intriguing. tecton3d
dissapointing? No ~ 64 bit and faster viewports are enough for me to upgrade and the improvements to MR do indeed look promising : )
Munz
Does anyone know when Max 9.0 will be released? The Mental Ray Update looks very cool...
Ricardo Eloy
It's to be released around october. About the new features, I like the new Hair&Fur (it now works with mr and radiosity!) and the new mr. Of course, it looks stunning and fast in the video, but don't forget they were using a dual HT or duo core or something like that (see the 4 buckets). Anyway, it got me thinking about the upgrade more seriously than I thought I would.
Camby1298
WOW! For mr users it seems like a blessing for arch+design shader; instead of the typical mr shader where you have to control the texture with many different segments and different types of shaders, now the whole texture is included in one complete shader. Plus with the ability to speed up glossy reflections based on quality and interperlation, the new fg configuration and the sky light, sun light system/shader. mr 3.5 alone is worth the upgrade IMHO....now if I can only convince work to buy it for me...hmmmm:confused:
AJLynn
I think it gets said very often, but I think sun/sky systems are a bit overrated - it's easy enough to get the same effect with HDR or procedurals - but the advantage I see here, assuming it all works well, is speed - setting up materials using the new system when you want to get something quick and don't need the power of the old system, and whatever new raytracing optimizations you can get from it. Now I need to get somebody to buy me a dual Xeon 51xx with Windows 64 to run this on... any volunteers?...
Chris Johnson
My favorite thing however is all the bug fixes. For example Autobackup has been fixed up in numerous places: 1. Resets the autosave timer after you perform a save operation. 2. It will only saves if the scene is dirty. 3. Maximum number of autobackups have been bumped up to an arbitrary number of 99. ~~It could go higher. There are alot of other things that have been cleaned up in the lower levels of the code that will never make the front pages. Chris J.
Koper
Many say seeing is believing and it all looks dandy, but i would like to see a demonstration where the guy starts from scratch, even if it is just a couple of boxes, and he doesn't just use the metal shaders. oh, im talking about the MR demonstration. otherwise it is jaw droping. do you guys think they'll do another demo if we ask then nicely?? Archmage
Heeehaaa. I'm running 2 x Opteron 285 Dual Cores with 8 Gig ram so I cant wait for 64 bit. I use both MR and Vray and I dont think MR was that far behind in the first place. Even with my 64bit platform the most of my memory I could use up to now was 3.8 Gig. No more crashesssss!!! .... touch wood
