exporting to 3ds problem

Hi chaps, age old problem here i thought i'd try to bash out -

if you want to export a 3d mesh from autocad to another rendering application a popular export method is the .3DS file type.

trouble is, if a single object is too big and has too many verts in it, autocad fails to convert it to the 3DS file and tells you so with an error message. the usual solution is to then break down that offending object into a couple of smaller separate bits, export to 3DS, then re-assemble in your chosen rendering app.

How can i lift this cap? i remember years ago when in R10 i found the option to remove this limitation, but how do i do it in the modern day AutoCAD?

Instead of exporting from autocad, why don't you try importing it into your rendering application

?

thats what i'm trying to do in the first place :p

i want to export my 3d autocad model into my 3d render application :) i know of all the other file types, but with my experience i've found 3ds to be the best solution so far (other than the vert cap limit)

great post STRAT! I've been wondering how to get rid of that blasted limit too... would save a lot of time not having to reorganize the file and export from individual layers... someone here's gotta know how to get around it.

just a thought (which could be rubbish!) but could you save your modern acad file as an R10 version, Open in R10, and export from there as a .3ds?
