shahrokh
what is the best kind of light source for interior scenes with artificial lightings when your renderer is Vray? photometric? standard? vray LightMaterial? ... which one?
JamesTaylor
its going to depend on what your light source is....... i'd say put vray lights as planes against any window, vray light mat for light emitting surface such as a tv screen etc. for light fittings you can just vray lights maybe set a sphere's but photometric lights with ies files will give you more of an effect.... its certainly going to be a case of what ever fits the bill is the right way to go

JamesTaylor
i don't have much experience with Mental Ray but have never had any issue using photometric lights with ies files in vray, they will be slower to render than a standard basic light but if your after a specific effect you've little choice ....... as for Mental Ray being faster than vray, i find this difficult to believe, vray is well known to one of the fastest engines around and is one its main selling points, on the other hand Mental Ray is known for being slow in relation to other engines and overly complecated to get a grip off. how about posting some examples of these test renders, it might help us shed some more light on the issue?? Realmind
the scene shahrokh has talked about, is mine.when I tried with one linear light I saw that the speed of mental ray to create clear image was more than vray!but after adding more photometric lights to my scene I saw that vray was faster!now I want to post them.I think the problem is that, the image has been rendered by Mental ray is more accurate and clear than vray specialy in blue light area under the shelf and speed of vray is not enough!it finished his job only 7 minutes faster than mental ray. JamesTaylor
it don't know much about Mentral Ray but the definition does look better. Can you post the render settings used for vray...... i suspect that these could be optimized to increase performance

JamesTaylor
these look pretty well set actually.... i am suprised at the speed comparison against Mental Ray although the scene is pretty simple interms of materials etc (no glossy reflections and such). Although 8 mins of 38mins is roughly a 20% - 25% increase in speed which as a percentage is quite high.
Realmind
thanks for your interest.but I think that the problem is just IES lights!any way Vray is great and I use it in my every day rendering tasks!
