AJLynn
There's already mental ray discussion in the Max and Other 3rd Party Renderers forums, though there's more on its frustrations than its power.
Camby1298
Jeff Patton is the man you seek. He can be found here or at www.CGsociety.com. There are a ton of forums on mental ray (none of which exclaim frustration) .
Thiago de Andrade
I'm a MR user, and I think it's very powerfull and, although many people will disagree, fast. Not very simple to learn, but the newer versions are getting easier and easier. The secret to its power, in my opinion, is to use the MR shaders, specially the DGS, and always start the rendering with very low parameters, and improve them little by little until you get confident enough to set it just right. Mental Images did a great job improving the GI and Final Gather, so you'll need very low settings to get a good result. I've tried Vray once and didn't see so much ease of use on it, and I was half way to being comfortable enough with mental ray, so I gave up Vray, which is by far the most popular renderer on the CG industry. The secret is to keep studying!
