Drunkenbear
Hi these are my first images put forward on here so any input on these images would be welcomed also any good advise on lighting or materials to make them look more realistic would be appreciated cheers
shahrokh
good job Stefan! but the pics show no GI calculations and i think that's why it looks less real. have u ever tried Vray or Mental Ray with GI on?
Drunkenbear
no i haven't i know mental ray comes with max 7 so you think that would make it look better? could you suggest some default levels or a good tutorial on using mental ray
NOOXY
i think your modelling is ok but the lighting lacks contrast.it's something i struggled with when i just started rendering..do a serach on this forum for mental ray and some stuff must show up...good luck and keep us posted
Drunkenbear
cheers for that Danny I've not used mental ray yet! but i guess you have to dip your toe into the water to get wet at some point
Trevor Tizard
Hi, Did a similar thing myself a couple of years ago - making the transition to a GI renderer that is. Just my own experience you understand, but I struggled with mental ray. However, I downloaded the free version of vray and got some very cool results very quickly. There is also some superb support on the forums for vray both here and at http://www.chaosgroup.com Keep posting to let us know how you get on. shahrokh
yeah i go with Trevor on the idea of CHAOSGROUP. i myself have learnt alot about Vray through that site. i'm sorry i dont feel so confiden with MentalRay but as Danny suggested it's best to just check out it's forum here. if you need basic settings to start with vray tell me, i will help u. Good Luck
Drunkenbear
ok here is one of the rooms using Mental Ray for the first time ever! i can see what you mean by the difference, but 1. how do i get rid of the dots on the bed 2. whats happend to the cornice and skirtings they seem to be all distorted any suggestions or comments would be appreciated
shahrokh
this is great! although there are imperfections but i think we are doing some progress with GI. keep it going!
Drunkenbear
Thanks for that do you know why the cornice and skirting appear odd? they're just a lofted profile with a uv mapping also how to get rid off the black spots on the bed? any ideas? cerpnjak
Hi there, I'm no expert at all at using Mental Ray, I have learnt in the last few days that it is very complex and the learning curve is quite steep, however the results can be as equally stunning as the more preferred Vray, which I understand is far more easier to master in the short term that is. This is what I've been told anyway. There is a great thread over at CGsociety all about mental ray and settings, it is very informative, I have learnt quite alot from it in the last couple of days. Check it out, you'll learn alot from it http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=124999&page=1&pp=15&highlight=Mental+lighting Hope this helps
Drunkenbear
ok the spots seem to be caused by a basic multi/sub object material using an architectural fabric material in one of the slots. I've removed the material and put in a standard material with similar settings and the dots are gone. Just the cornice and coving to sort out now
shahrokh
well, as i told u i dont know much about MR but from vray logic i know that low light samples produce odd render results like what u are having on the bottom and top of ur wall. so try to up the sample rates (which i dont know how in MR!) and u might get a better result. waiting to see ur improvements on this.. Drunkenbear
isn't that just the way you spend ages trying to work something out and then the client comes along and says they don't want any coving in the rooms oh well at least i can now concentrate on getting the lighting better. One other thing how do you know what size the sampling radius should be, is there some way of roughly calculating based on the room size? cheers
anas
Good start, try d link http://www.chaosgroup.com 4 updates on v ray and mental ray:confused:
medopal
may i know how to get rid of dots, try these: 1- u must increase the resulotion make it more than 1600*1200 ull get better results, and if more than 2200 that will be best 2- i dont know about mental ray, but in vray there is something called (Show calc phase) that 1 show u each step of rendering but give wrong results most of the time, and when i unselect it i had better results 3- make sure u have the full version of mental ray, (not cracked), and that version is compatible with ur 3ds max version by the way i advice u to use V-ray its awesome for interiors
Drunkenbear
Ok been off a bit and had client change thery're minds as usual but here are the latest updates using mental ray. Viaggio Della Libertà
HI stefan Are you just using GI? Cause that would explain the dots. Final gather will smooth out the dots. IN both cases of FG and GI you have to play with ur sample radius and samples. Also the nr of photons play a big roll. The black spots iam not shure of. But keep us posted on ur progress
Viaggio Della Libertà
Sorry dude i was refering to an old post. Great progress made on ur latest work. The only thing i can comment on is the fact that ur scene seems to be washed. Your loosing contrast. ur corners of ur walls arnt defined and i think this is due to ur photons being to big. Play with the sample radius and samples and try fiddling with the decay aswell. Cool mam chat laterz
