Hi,

Did a similar thing myself a couple of years ago - making the transition to a GI renderer that is.

Just my own experience you understand, but I struggled with mental ray. However, I downloaded the free version of vray and got some very cool results very quickly. There is also some superb support on the forums for vray both here and at http://www.chaosgroup.com

Keep posting to let us know how you get on.

i'm sorry i dont feel so confiden with MentalRay but as Danny suggested it's best to just check out it's forum here.

if you need basic settings to start with vray tell me, i will help u.

Good Luck

Hi there,

I'm no expert at all at using Mental Ray, I have learnt in the last few days that it is very complex and the learning curve is quite steep, however the results can be as equally stunning as the more preferred Vray, which I understand is far more easier to master in the short term that is. This is what I've been told anyway.

There is a great thread over at CGsociety all about mental ray and settings, it is very informative, I have learnt quite alot from it in the last couple of days. Check it out, you'll learn alot from it

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=124999&page=1&pp=15&highlight=Mental+lighting

Hope this helps

ok the spots seem to be caused by a basic multi/sub object material using an architectural fabric material in one of the slots. I've removed the material and put in a standard material with similar settings and the dots are gone.

Just the cornice and coving to sort out now :(

well, as i told u i dont know much about MR but from vray logic i know that low light samples produce odd render results like what u are having on the bottom and top of ur wall.

so try to up the sample rates (which i dont know how in MR!) and u might get a better result.

waiting to see ur improvements on this..

isn't that just the way you spend ages trying to work something out and then the client comes along and says they don't want any coving in the rooms

oh well at least i can now concentrate on getting the lighting better. One other thing how do you know what size the sampling radius should be, is there some way of roughly calculating based on the room size?

cheers

may i know how to get rid of dots, try these:

1- u must increase the resulotion make it more than 1600*1200 ull get better results, and if more than 2200 that will be best

2- i dont know about mental ray, but in vray there is something called (Show calc phase) that 1 show u each step of rendering but give wrong results most of the time, and when i unselect it i had better results

3- make sure u have the full version of mental ray, (not cracked), and that version is compatible with ur 3ds max version

by the way i advice u to use V-ray its awesome for interiors

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry dude i was refering to an old post.

Great progress made on ur latest work. The only thing i can comment on is the fact that ur scene seems to be washed. Your loosing contrast. ur corners of ur walls arnt defined and i think this is due to ur photons being to big. Play with the sample radius and samples and try fiddling with the decay aswell.

Cool mam chat laterz
