Drunkenbear
Hi All well just had my sysytem upgraded from 1GB to 3GB after moaning about how slow it was. The problem is that Max seems to be out of control now using all the CPU power ( 3.2GHZ ) and i can't even open a web page whilst it renders without it freezing up or slowing down. Is there a way to limit max's memory usage so that I can run other applications as i was before the upgrade cheers
skippy
use low priority mode for 3dsmax in task manager
squeakybadger
take a peek in you boot.ini file located in c: (open it with notepad) add /3GB on the operating systems bit (or if it exists, take it off) eg, [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /3GB this switch gives better handling of 2gb+ ram within windows. Interesting tip. I suppose if you had 4GB of ram you would add /4G ?
squeakybadger
Brian, The /3GB switch is the only one. Its a Microsoft thing It just allocates more memory to the programs, rather than reserving it for windows itself. Xp64/Vista dont have a ram limit, and will use everything you can cram in them! OK, I've heard of this 3GB switch before but never knew how to apply it. I'm glad to see it's so easy. Thanks.
Matt Clementson
Be warned that it can make your system unstable - the results are a bit unpredictable. I've tried it on some workstations with success and others where it completely screwed the system and needed an OS reinstall...
tecton3d
Xp64/Vista dont have a ram limit, and will use everything you can cram in them! well, up to a point;) Ram limitations are OS dependant and I've heard that Vista will be limited to a measly 128gb (of which, ATM, there are no consumer boards to support this much RAM) and for more than 128gb you'd need to go with one of the server OS's which are more than any of us want to spend on an OS. Be warned that it can make your system unstable - the results are a bit unpredictable. I've tried it on some workstations with success and others where it completely screwed the system and needed an OS reinstall... quoted for agreement ~ I was asking the tech guy @ Boxx about this the other day and he nearly shite a brick! For peace of mind, and as Matt recommends, I'd stay away from the switch and wait for Vista and max 9.
Brian Cassil
I'll consider myself warned (maybe even scared ) Thanks guys. I'm already putting the pieces in place to upgrade my OS to a 64bit version here at work soon. Although I wasn't really considering Vista. Will it be ready by the time Max 9 comes out? Drunkenbear
well the latest update it that the 3gb made the comp very unstable so we took out 1gb and its working much better. Bearing in mind though that im using a standard NEC desktop maching at work, i tend to bring in my alienware laptop from home as its quicker. oooh for a proper workstation!!
