creativeway
Hi all, Im new in 3D and actualy I'm studiing Mental Ray as render, but I see all those great images in the forum are mostely done in Vray. My questions is: -Is Vray superior to Mental Ray? and -Shoud I invest my time studiing Mental Ray or is it a waste of time? Tank you all Alx
manta
They are all capable of the same results, here try this, use Mentalray for 2 weeks, and if you don't find yourself progressing fast enough, then try Vray, I would say that most of the people here find Vray to be more user friendly, but I have spoken to others that have said the opposite... mskin
Its weird. I see everyone using VRAY too, but i have been pretty happy with the results i've achieved with MR, plus it comes with Max. I spent a couple of weeks playing with Vray Light or free or whatever and just got frustrated. I definately didn't give it as much time as i should have, but i was relativiely happy with my MR results. Does VRAY use Radiosity? may make animations quicker.... Brian Cassil
The new version of MentalRay looks to have some really sweet enhancements as well as much more user friendly. FWIW.
mahorela
I was getting some pretty reasonable results with MR and had put alot of time and effort into it but I now wouldn't even consider using it in place of vray. I personally think my work is infinitely better now and I was up and running with Vray almost immediately. I also think that the best work on this site and others that I see is Vray stuff. nisus
Hi Alexandre, I think it's well worth learning MR, especially with max9 on it's way! It has a better implemention or MR in max. FGmaps can now be 'freezed' directly from within max. It is even now (again) faster. FG presets, Easy AO and round corners etc. Big bonus: new daylight and MR-arch.materials AND implementation in other programs like VUE6. (I'm not sure even Vray is supported for now...) Max9 may not seem as a huge upgrade for most people, but MR is A LOT easier to acces now... So the MR-max arch.viz community may only grow... If you are looking for A GOOD MR-Start, be sure to check out Autodesks e-courses. They launced some EXCELLENT videotuts on every aspect of MR. They won't teach you real day-2-day-workflows (which MOST trainingdiscs don't - except a few gnomons) but it will give you a good insight of how MR works. And believe me, it's simple! So simple that the hardest part of learning the basics, is just realising that it is a lot simpler than normal scanline render. I could not believe it was that simple myself, so I kept looking for more and more difficult. Thàt wastes my time learning MR. But with the e-courses this time is gone now ,-) rgds, nisus
John Dollus
Rendering systems always change. Never let a piece of software dictate your style or workflow. If you are new to 3D, you should learn the basics with the main tools (ie. in Max, you have scanline, radiosity and MentalRay). It will make adapting to the changes much easier. richmondlu
I am a maya user (I know evil Maya user) and all I use is MR I am very happy with results and my work turns out just as good as vray. All the interior images I see using vray are all foggy and hazy like dream pictures. I have never seen a photo so hazy in my life. Maybe the old time picture places when you dress up as a cowboy? And if you dont like MR but have learned the basics it is really easy to bounce over to other renders you just have to learn the vocab. But that is my two cents and my feel on it. MR is a good choice.
Elliot
I use MR because it is similar to the renderer that comes with SolidWORKS. I am now doing some images where I am using some of the people from RPC. I found that MR will not render the Archvision - RPC people. In order to see the results I have to go to the scanline renderer which is very slow. I understand VRay will render the RPC people. Is there a solution to the RPC / MR without having to buy the RPC 400.00 plu-in. Thanks Elliot
nisus
Hi All, Well... VRay images idd all look the same. Looks like there is only one artist out there... I wonder where individual style has gone since Vray kind of took over... nisus

Its funny, but more often than not I can identify the render engine used when I look at a pic, only been surprized a couple times...
