briantone
Hello everyone, What are the advantages and disadvantages to applying Vraylightmtl to an object to create a light as opposed to using standard or photometrics included in 3dsMax proper? Any insight is appreciated!
BrianKitts
biggest advantage to vrayLightMtl (IMO) is being able to shape an object and apply a vraylight material to it. I use it all the time to build sconces and globes for pendants. And then you mearly turn up the multiplier to get the desired brightness. the downside is you don't get much control over the way it casts shadows, nor can it be assigned any photometric values for lens rings, etc. Therefore most of the time I use the vray material to create the object that "glows" for a light, and then also use a photometric light in addition for actual lens effects. ihabkal
Brian, you forgot to mention how slow is VrayLightMtl compared to Actual Lights
robertherrick
Vray light material can be realy adaptable and so useful when you haven't got the time to place 50 or so lights in a scene, you can simply extrude some spot lights and apply a vray light mat. i've attached a really good (but strong vray light material), excellent for pendant lights.
