Fran
Thanks Scott. The software comes with a hardware lock that allows you to render over 10 computers with unlimited cores. So, theoretically, I could aquire 10 dual quadcores and render over 80 cores with one license.
Adehus
Hold that brick – maybe I'm safe. Oh hell, who knows who or what to believe in this business. I don't know what to do with my brick, either...

Can't wait until they release 1.0. Unless Maxwell makes some big gains to catch up, I'm probably in.
AJLynn
What's this, enthusiasm? Haven't you guys learned your lesson? But more seriously, I'm not in on this but I've been NDA'ed before and they usually contain a clause about not talking about the speed of the software, so I'm waiting to see what non-NDA people say about speed before I get excited about it. I just can't get my head around the idea of an unbiased MLT engine being "fast" - not the sunlit renders you can do in an hour but the ones with more difficult light propagation. Guest imanobody
MLT will never get faster, the hardware will make it look like it's faster. Anytime a company jumps in and tries to make MLT faster it ends up looking raytraced. If you want the best results you just have to wait. I read that Intel plans to make an 80 core chip within 5 years. I would imagine that should bring the whole speed issue to a close. The only problem is - will the licenses change to use all these cores? For mental ray you still have to buy a license for every core, so that means, if I buy a Quad Core, I have to shell out $4000 just for the licenses for one computer. I think that's pretty crazy, but that's how they make their money I guess.
