DDR400 become DRR333. why??

Dear fellows,

 

I just upgrade more RAM to my pc(AMD X2 4200+). Previously I was using 2 DDR400 512MB. after adding 1 DDR400 1G RAM. It appear on the startup screen that the RAM only run in DDR333 with 64bit which normally was 128bit.. Can anyone help?:confused: thanks in advance~! Cheers

you have to match you memory in pairs to get the most out of it. If you had 2x 1gb sticks in the correct sockets (both 1gb sticks in a blue socket or both in a black socket) ~ you'd probably be running at the max your motherboard will allow (in this case 400). When you "mix and match" capacities without making sure the ram is symmetrical, like your 1x1gb + 2x512mb = 3 RAM sockets used instead of 4... for some reason that doesn't sit well with the mobo and it throttles back.

 

to answer your question ~ it will decrease performance but probably not enough to worry about... if you're concerned about it run some benchmarks... or better yet ~ get another 1gb ddr400 stick :D

It will perform better than 1 gig at 400, assuming you do things that use the extra RAM. Also, there are two issues here - what Daron said, which is something that can get you especially with higher speeds and fast timings, and what I was talking about, which is that, matched pairs or no, some AMD boards are not able to use more than two high-capacity (two-sided) DIMMS at 400. You could get 4 matched 512s and only be able to run at 333, while 2 matched 1024 from the same product line would run at 400.

Look it up in your motherboard docs first - we could both be wrong, and it's an easy thing to check.

 

Yeah, seems like you guys are right. My motherboard only support 2 channel of DDR400 and have to be indentical RAM. That means I have to buy anotehr 1G RAM~!:mad:

Yeah, RAM is tricky. The faster it gets, the tighter the requirements - for example, with the newer boards you can have dual-channel DDR2, but you have to put identical sticks in the two sets of slots (can't pair a 1GB with 2x512MB) and there are dozens of things that can make it unable to perform at spec timings. I was watching a thread on my MB manufacturer's forum where a guy had a 400MHz MB and good 400MHz RAM and no matter what he did he couldn't get it to run at 400MHz, even though he had apparently done everything right.
