MR ARCH 2B
Hey guys I used to use sketchup all the time until I learned how to use max. The easiest way to set up the model is to export the sketchup model as an autoCAD file by going to file export 3d model. Under options and export only check the faces. I never messed with the materials in sketchup I always did that in max. Making layers for each of materials you want is the easiest but it's up to you on what you decide. It's better to deal with the materials in max because you have the option of UVW maps and can add bump maps, ect. Hope this helps:)
Bugga_Guy
Like Mr Arch, I too use Sketchup all the time and like he said the best result is to model in sketchup and texture map it in 3ds max. However if you have to texture in sketchup, the only way you can retain the textures is by exporting the file as a 3ds file. Another way to do this is to ensure your model layers are split up properly (ie arrange all the same brick, glass etc model in the same layer) and export as a dwg. When the model is imported into max the the layer information is still intact, so all you have to do is add a texture map without haveing to edit any meshes. AJLynn
If you use 3DS and materials, you can use Group By Texture before exporting then change the Sketchup materials in Max - it saves the step of doing material assignments.
renderbeads
Thanks for all the tremendous help you guys have taken. Could some of you point out websites that offer free tutorials online. I want to learn 3ds max, especially lighting, texturing etc. I have come to know a free raytracer called kerkythea, and had some amazing results using it as my render engine. Call it a transition to the real thing or an upgrade of my skills. I have already googled some sites, thought i may missed some great websites you guys only know of. Thank you. 'till again.
