Ky Lane
I know this is far from the most stunning architectural development, but Id like some tips to help make this a little more beleivable. So far, i know I need some better foliage (ignore the duplication/flip, its just there for example atm), and Im awaiting a brief on the landscaping, but Im also thinking signage, and can someone PLEASE help me out with the grass? Ive tried displacement maps, and vray fur, none of which work (fur took 8hrs to START rendering!)...My material library is very limited Anyway, some tips/hints/comments appreciated. Justin Hunt
Hey KY (sorry) I have also been through the displacment head*^%&*. One thing I did discover was to increase the density of the mesh (tesselation) so I could decrease the displacment settings. This freeed enough RAM to render. Ky Lane
Justin, Done some experimenting with grass, and think Ive come up with an economical solution. I went outside with the digicam, and took some shots, did some photoshop work and managed a good 5000x3000 map and displacement/bump map....using a vraydisplamentmod modifier, I managed to get some good results for mid-distant large area grass.... I simulated a field and it came up quite good. A little recognisable duplication of colors/bump, but for what I need it for, I think it does the trick! I also played with turning the diffusion map down say 50%, and playing with the diffuse color to darken/lighten the grass....seems to work well! Can also see the render time is all good too. Took the fraction of the time it took to do fur! Let me know if you'd like me to email you my maps (sharing the love!) and an example max file to see how I got it to look "ok". Just email me at ky@lanedigital.com. Otherwise, I might pop it up on vray-materials.de

Ky Lane
No Worries. The high res render is looking a million bucks. Hope it works for your coast project.
Justin Hunt
Almost there with that one, The stone wall displacement is what was doing my head in, now the design has changed, so I am waiting for that. Suppose it gives me a little time to fix and perfect the method. The grass will also help heaps thanks JHV
Ky Lane
I think this has worked out well. It renders fast, looks decent, and take SFA memory. I think Im onto something
