sheerluck
Greetings all ! Thought I'd put my first post out with a request for any asphalt and / or concrete materials source. I'm reconstructing a motor vehicle collision and am looking for some realistic surface materials to apply. Also having some difficulty placing windows onto surrounding buildings...is there a short cut for this? Thanks in advance!
imgumbydammit
Take Digi Camera outside..shoot large resolution photos of concrete and asphalt....That or use google image search...or purchase a collection from dosch...Image Ready...Total Textures....Turbosquid....etc.... as far as the window question...what exactly is the problem ??? IGD edit: Or search the forums for "Free textures" there was a thread about 6000 free textures recently that might lead you to what you need
Eric
Max ships with images of various things for materials - one of the folders being "C:\3dsmax7\maps\Concrete". It just so happens, in my Concrete folder at least, I've got several images used for mapping windows onto boxes to simulate concrete buildings with glass windows. I did not put them there, so you should also have them. There is also windows in: "C:\3dsmax7\maps\Misc" And some very good textures in (among all the others): "C:\3dsmax7\maps\ArchMat"

I browsed around, found another 'concrete' material and that one showed mapped onto the sphere in the Material Editor and I was able to apply that to my selected polygons. If you know why the first material wouldn't apply itself properly within the Material Editor, I'm all ears ! PS--this is also the reason for my not being able to apply the 'window' images to my skyscraper...I've got lots of bitmaps...most don't import as desired into the Material Editor.... Any hints, suggestions would be most welcome !
Eric
Your problem is you need to apply the image to the Diffuse slot of the material editor for the sphere you're applying to the object in your scene. For example, select one of the materials that does not have the little triangles in the 4 corners of the material preview. The triangles in the corners mean that particular material has been applied to an object in your scene. If you're working on the concrete, then create a material called "Concrete" or "Sidewalk", or whatever you're focused on. Make sure you name your material at the Root/Parent level. Now, scroll down to the Diffuse Color button under the Maps rollout. Click on the "None" button and then from the window that pops up, select Bitmap. When the "Select Bitmap Image File" window opens, browse to find your image file that you're applying to the current material. Your object will now need a UVW Mapping modifier applied to it in order for your material to apply correctly. You may also want to turn on the Blue and White checkered box that says "Show Map In Viewport" so you can see your changes as you adjust it. Turn this off when you're done as it's a memory hog - unless you have a lot of memory in your computer. You can find this stuff in the help file, but you might be better off buying a Max book at the book store - like a Max Bible.
