Woody
Is there a modifier for max which will fillet the hard edges all in one go? Please help?
Brian Cassil
In short no. But you can chamfer the edges 2 or 3 times to get a similar effect. Not as good, I know, but it's all we got for now. There are a couple of plugins that make this possible one being power solids by NPower. Check it out here. http://www.npowersoftware.com/solids/psoverview.htm It's a little pricey though.
Woody
Thanks for the info Brian, I guess I was just being a bit lazy and wanted the software to sort it out for me... Cheers again!
gnuhong
Try f-Edge. I think it's from ChaosGroup.
Verma
Max 9 coming out next month will have a new version of Mental Ray and it will have a shader to smooth the hard edges at render time. Check out Mental Ray Video here: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=7684178
Brian Cassil
I looked at that at siggraph and it looks great at a glance but I think the actualy usability of it is limited. For one, it's mental ray and that means forget about whatever renderer your comfortable with (unless it happens to be MR). Also, there doesn't seem to be any way to control which edges get smoothed by how much. In fact, even interior edges will get "rounded" giving a very strange result. I tried to check out f-edge but it doesn't look like it's around anymore.
