tahoon
i'm a fresh Vray user I'm making some progress and i m starting to have satisfying results for lighting and Global illumination but i have a problem Which is (the material seem to loose the details of the texture and the bump is so shallow it barely seen ) whereas same textures are more clear and sound in scanline.why? Here are two renedered photos of twoof my projects the Materials I used were supposed to be rough and rocky and even the tiling is not visble as isaid before these maps were succseful in scanline I think its a render settings problem that's my openion but ineed your's
Craig Ramsay
Bump maps only usually work well in strong direct light, if the material is in shadow or lit with indirect illumination then the bump won't show well. Using displacement may be the solution.
martin walker
are you using a high contrast grayscale bitmap for your bump map? just copying your diffuse texture to your bump channel usually doesnt provide enough black / white contrast
tahoon
are you using a high contrast grayscale bitmap for your bump map? nice try but i always use grayscale bitmaps for bump , and craig of in those shots i used target direct with vray shdow sor lighting enabled GI in my render settings ,is it something wrong in my render settings or waht? those shots where had nice bump rough texture when i test rendered with scanline im positive about that .. and Craig do u mean that using Gi always wash bump or what ? thank u all.. lecameleon
Antialiasing filters would be my guess - although Craig is right about lights and displacement.. Try using some other filters apart from area... Just an idea..
Ky Lane
If youre using vray, use the vraydisplamentmod modifier.

sMs
HI im a new user... and i hae the same problem about my bumps... i even modified my bump files by increasent their contrast settings... still that didnt help.... and yes.. it worked perfectly with scanline render... i tried to change my bump setting from 30 to 700 (LOL) still nothing.. i was wondering if i can use a skydome?? u know... more bounces? will this work?? about vraydisplacementmod or displacement.. wont this increase by a LOT the render time? like from 1 minute to 20 minutes?? anyway im going to try both solutions... thanx for replying... r u guys having the same problem with ur bumps? gonna upload a screenshot later on... sMs
iv been playing around with vray.. hoping ill find a solution about this problem... i v seen that if i use lightcache instead of irradiance map for first bounce... the bumps will appear... simple conclusion: the problem is with irradiance map calculation... (btw im using skylight and vraysun) settings r high for irradiance map The only way we can see the bumps is when vraysun is face 2 face to the 3d model... any suggestion? i v tried displacement.. it works. but there r 2 problems.. longer redering solution and displacement doesnt look great on corners... does vray knows skylight is to the first bounce source, or did vraysun take its place? is there a way to tell it which light is the first bounce source? im using the latest vray version... anyone else got with this problem?? if yes, what did u do to resolve it PS; I need ur help pros (vrays artists)
gt3d45
I don't know why vray does this i've been doing many test as well and haven't found the solution yet. In the attachment the was has fully detailed bumps on the walls in scanline but vray wipes them out when rendered. If I find out i will post. Hope someone can find out soon. Trevor Tizard
I have found in the past that if the image is rendered at a high resolution the bumps will be more noticable with Vray than when testing at low res.
Tyorl
Try using standart "Normal Bump Map" for bump or search for ReliefMapper. Read help for usage and understanding it take more work to create normalbump maps but result will be much better. Take a look, there are no displacement only Normalbump with ReliefMapper: http://img386.imageshack.us/my.php?image=renderscenerelief1iw.jpg
