Brian Smith
You can use anything, standard lights, photometric, vray...they can all get you to the same result, just different ways. Try with something simple first, a single standard direct light, exponential color mapping, and use low quality settings so that you can see experimental results quickly. Make sure you use vray on everything whenever possible.
Clifton Santiago
With Vray sun and sky, with a standard camera, I've found an intensity value of about .01 works well with LWF and a Reinhard burn of 0.5. If you use the vray physical camera leave the sun intensity at 1.0, and adjust your camera settings so as to get an EV value of about 14 for a nice sunny day.
