IceAged
I am trying to make some adjustments to a Max model of a medium sized 3 storey building. I created it the usual way - taking the architects Autocad plans, deleting any unecessary data, purging them and importing them into Max, (the prepared Autocad file was around 800kb). I don't understand why - but Max has been very, very slow with this particular file from the outset, especially when i have 'snap' enabled. If i select multiple objects i am watching the hour glass. I tried deleting the Autocad plans, saving and restarting, but this did nothing to improve performance. I have merged the Max model into a new scene, minus the Autocad lines, but it is still hopelessly slow - the MAX GEOMETRY itself is unusually slow, even in a new scene!! I can't even move simple walls around without having to wait ages... Now they want changes, i am trying to import the new Autocad file but it is impossible to do anything - the task manager is stuck at 100% when i try to move a wall! I have far more compex scenes that run perfectly well on my system, yet something seems wrong with this particular file... slow from the very outset. Can anyone please help?? Has anyone had this problem before... if so, what did you do? AMD Athlon 64 Processor 2500 RAM Quadro FX 4100 Windows XP SP2 3DS MAX 8, SP3 ADT 2006 Thanks! Arnold Sher
we had that recently and the only way to get around it for us was to export dwg drawing into 3ds and that seem to work and certainly sped things up. The only problem with that was ofcourse that the drawing automaticaly put everything on one layer and converted it into white.. What a pain... There must be an easier way to make a living... Paul Twyman
Whenever i've had a scene that seems to be using a stupid amount of memory or keeps crashing it normally ends up being down to one or two objects that are causing the problem. I would try merging objects one by one into a fresh scene untill you weed out the guilty ones. If part of the geometry was created from the CAD plans (which were causing a problem) then it is probably still holding information about these somewhere. lambros
I agree, probably there is still over the top information in some objects. Sometimes, autocad files tend to have extra detail in curves(Tools->options->Display tab->Display Resolution: perhaps you need to lower down the arc and circle smoothness). If you import a dwg file with large smoothness, max gets the creeps.
caffa
There are some snap problems in MAX when the drawing imported from CAD is really far away from the 0,0,0 point, you should check that
IceAged
OK - i've created a fresh Max file and i'm slowly importing objects over - so far, so good. Lambros, i checked the Autocad file... turns out the guy that drew it had set the Display Resolution to 10000. I'll run some more tests on this when i have time, but i'm guessing this minor setting was the cause of problem in Max. I'll add it to my Autocad checklist Thanks everyone for your fast response!
