tommyjj
i've been having this problem for a few months now.. it seems to be getting worse, I tried installing max 8 to see if it stopped the problem but no luck... I'm running a dual xeon 3.2 ghz with 80gb hard disk (20% full) and 2 gb ram the geometry seems to stop working and go totally crazy. this happens about 30% of the time. In 'wireframe' view everything seems ok. i'm using an ATI Fire GL 5100 3d card with the lastest drivers very pretty, but these are supposed to be buildings for archi vis! Anyone else had similar problems?
lecameleon
ATI has problems with the viewport rendering when you enable openGL.. try switching to DirectX.. and see if this solves your problem.. (I dont have a solution, but why dont you try switching to the older ATI drivers and rollback the ones you installed recently. Also, try using the riva tuner to tweak that card )
Matt Clementson
This is almost certainly down to units and how close you are to the origin. I bet you imported a CAD plan and started modelling straight off it without centering it to the 0,0,0 point - right? CAD plans are usually position with correct eastings/northings so that you can take site location points off them - this means they are miles away (literally) from the 0,0,0 point. MAX hasn't got the same level of precision that a CAD programme has, this means that when numbers get very large (or very small) you get rounding errors and it deforms your geometry. In order to avoid this you need to model as close to 0,0,0 as possible and to use sensible units (personally I leave MAX's system units as inches - I've learn't the hard way that changing them causes nothing but problems). It may be too late to save your geom (depends on how its created), but I suggest centering the entire model about 0,0,0 and go from there.
lecameleon
OOps baldrick.. you may be right.. I thought he was talking about problems with the viewport rendering.. my bad..
tommyjj
thanks guys, I'm pretty sure the model isnt too big or too small, It's all in meters at the moment, and i always build models from images (.EPS image files exported from AutoCAD, then turned into jpegs) and it all seems to be close to the centre point of max's 3d space. The messed up geometry doesnt show up in renders, and doesnt always return after reload. I've been using a custom driver for 3ds max that came with the graphics card... I've switched it to direct 3d and all seems ok for now. will keep you posted cheers
Matt Clementson
The messed up geometry doesnt show up in renders, and doesnt always return after reload. Ah - then that definitely points at the graphics drivers as you've already discovered. Glad you've resolved the issue.

lecameleon
Nah, jus a lucky guess.. good show man.. Just a hinty-poo : nvidia = openGL and ATI = DirectX.. especially ATI coz it has given problems with openGL all the while..
tommyjj
cheers again for the advice chaps, I've not had a problem since changing to Direct X. Funny that the 3ds max specific drivers that came with the 3d card actually do more harm than good!?
