pg1
So finally finally finally started to get my head around using LWF (linear work flow) We just upgraded to v 1.5 and the colour mapping options have changed so I just want to be sure of what workflow is correct with 1.5 Running max 9 so going to customize/ preference/ gamma lut and changing gamma to 2.2 checking affect material and colour selector and under bitmap files changing input gamma to 2.2 We render to 8-bit tga not .exr and so want to burn the gamma into the image rather than using throb's curve in the v-ray frame buffer. Before we used the gamma correction colour mapping with bright multiplier at 1 and dark at .454 but in vray 1.5 the names have been changed to multiplier-is this bright multiplier? and should it be set to 1? inverse gamma-is this dark multiplier?and should it be .454 and a new option gamma which should be left at default or not? BrianKitts
My preferenece has always been to leave it on linear with bright and dark at 1 and 1. As for burning it in, you can just change the new vray gamma setting to 2.2 (if thats wrong and it goes in the wrong direction than .4545... I'm rendering right now or I would test which is right) or as always you could do it in the max prefs for output gamma. (obviously not in both places at the same time) just out of curiousity why don't you render to exr's? the post control is amazing, I almost always tweak all my images just a little bit with the exposure and gamma, and it's great with the exr holding all the detail and quality even in darker areas being able to brighten 'em up alot better than you could with an 8 bit image. And then of course you wouldn't have to worry about burning in the gamma correction.
pg1
Thanks for the reply BKitts I. At the moment we are using colour mapping at gamma correction and just leaving everything at default (as in mulitiplier inverse multiplier and gamma at 1) and it looks ok nice shadow falloff a little washed out but will try using linear and then will try playing the gamma setting and see how I get on. Its annoying that I had just got my head around how to do this with bright multiplier at 1 and dark at .454 and then chaosgroup not only went and changed the colour mapping panel but dont have a updated explaination on the updated vray 1.5 help doc. in the support section. As for why we don't use exr. I started telling my boss about LWF about 6 months ago and we are just starting to use it now so if I mention exr. maybe we will start to use it before 2008:)
AJLynn
I've been out of the Vray loop for a while, but got a question here - would using VRImgTo Exr with the -sRGB flag be an appropriate step for LWF?
