Codec / Compression

How do you guys decide which choice

of codec is right for what animation.?

That would depend on what your client needs. It's the last thing you do. Right now you are going to be rendering uncompressed frames out of C4D (TIFF format is a good choice). At DVD resolution, each frame will be about 1MB. You do need to think about frames-per-second (PAL is 25 while NTSC is 30) and output resolution (image size) and pixel aspect ratio. Find out what your client will be needing, how they will be using your product. If they are planning to have another company put together final products (TV ads, for example) see about delivering raw frames. Even if you program disolves and all that into your piece you can have the compositing software output a 'TIF sequence'. That would be a set of frames without compression. The company doing the transfers tovarious media would then be worrying about codecs.

You need to know what your deliverables are supposed to be a and work backwards!
