Boizell
hey everyone! this hardware thing is really confusing.. id really appreciate the advice.. i think im getting a dell, but im not sure if a workstaion wld be worth it. i mean, i had a look at the 390 with the Core 2 Due E6600, 2 Gb RAM, 320 Gb HD and the Quadro FX 3450. at the same time there are other gaming PCs with the same specs but cheaper, the only difference is the video card. Where i can install the 1Gb Geforce 7950 Dual GPU. is the quadro worth it??? or is there anything more in the workstation that i havent detected that is different?? and is there a better option for the processor within the same price range?? im planning to get max 8 and vray.. thank you very much!! AJLynn
The Quadro is worth it if you use very high polygon geometry or want the advanced shading features (which Max doesn't really use). For most architecture work, a 3450 is overkill, and a lot of people do very good work while using Geforce or Radeon cards. To clarify, the video card does not affect rendering at all - it is responsible for the display on the screen. The better your video card, the smoother and faster your display will be. I use a Quadro 1500 at work, a FireGL v5100 at home (Ebay is awesome) and my laptop has a Radeon x1600, which is actually pretty good, but I've softmodded it up to a FireGL v5200, which is very good. The Core2 Duo is a great chip, but if you're in a position to build the machine yourself or buy from a vendor who lets you specify your motherboard etc., you can get a lot more speed by overclocking it. Look at the Core2 Duo threads on this board for more info.
Frosty
AJ, most of what you said is true, but there are some instances when the GC can impact rendering. Using software such as Gellato, the video can can power the rendering engine.
AJLynn
Well, okay, but he did say Vray And I've yet to see any Gelato renders that impress me...

Boizell
Awesome! then i think ill go for the Geforce.. dnt think ill be having super big scenes and im more worried about the render time, so ill invest in the processor and see how it goes. very useful info, thanks alot!!
