mesht
i've been trying to create the translucent lamp shade by using SSS and experimenting with the Transmittance level, but couldn't get the effect. as seen in the image attached. i've tried using opacity mapping and the lamp shade as emitter, but still didn't work out. the translucent lamp shade in the image is what i'm trying to create any ideas? AJLynn
What material settings were you using when you made that? Can you post an MXM file?
Devin Johnston
Aren’t there still problems with SSS, I know in V1.0 it wasn't working and for some reason I think it's still not working properly.
AJLynn
I've used it to do light-diffusing window glass and got the effect I was looking for. I think it was just two layers, one was Lambertian with transmitting pretty high and an SSS node, and the other was very transmitting, with a Fresnel reflection and a little glossy. mesht
i have post the mxm file, not sure if the layering is done correctly. the bitmap is what i'm trying to make it glow and translucent.
AJLynn
So I tried to make this work, and couldn't, and it looks like nobody else here had success either. There seems to be a bug involving SSS'ed materials with an emitter layer. I'd recommend asking on the Maxwell site forum, there may be a workaround that's completely unexpected, something like an invisible-to-camera cylindrical emitter ourside the shade, or a variant on the AGS concept. thickly
There is a tutorial on the Maxwell forum about this -- I have not actually tried it yet though. Good luck, let us know if it works. http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18228
