Is this possible if so how ?
manta
I'm pretty sure you can use fog...environment-fog
purple3d
can you assign that to an object ? or does it go on the whole scene ?
manta
its for the whole scene...just like real fog if you want something based on a single object, look into Z-depth
John Dollus
Are you looking for a reflection depth limit distance so objects on the sidewalk will reflect but objects across the street will not show and be replaced with a color or environment map instead? purple3d
yea thats pretty much it, so at the end of the scene the camera doesnt focus as much, and it looks more blurred
John Dollus
I can tell you how to do it in either MR or scanline but Vray crashes using the builtin raytracing controls within Max even with a Mtl Wrapper on top. Perhaps someone else knows of a different way?
Crazy Homeless Guy
yea thats pretty much it, so at the end of the scene the camera doesnt focus as much, and it looks more blurred as mentioned above, render a VrayZDepth pass, or use the depth of field option in the VrayCamera. without testing both, i am almost certain that the VrayZDepth pass would be significantly faster than a D.O.F. camera option. i was playing around with the VrayZDepth render element today. the changed the way it works in v1.5. it is no more like a traditional ZDepth field, rather than the encrypted lookind yellow black and white that they had before. the advantage is that you can load it into the alpha channel of the image in PhotoShop, and use the lens filter to create Zdepth that look like a simplified version of the DOF PRO plug-in. like i said, i am still playing around with this myself. another thing you could quickly do, which is what i think Manta was suggesting..... if you want a fog fall-off, use VrayZDepth to set the start distance, and end distance of the fog. take the pass into PhotoShop, load it as a selection, then fill with white, or probably better, paint fog like layers until the objects in the distance are no longer visable. there are several Vray rebnder elements available. http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150R1/render_elements.htm i don't know what each one does, but Vray Atmosphere may provide another solution for what you are trying to acheive. CookiE
I often use the default Max effects DOF under environment and effects, that works well and only adds about 1 second a frame to the render as it is calculated after the current frame is rendered and then applies it
