AJLynn
I've got it, tried to activate it with my subscription serial number and that failed... Aren't I supposed to be able to use that number on all our Autodesk stuff?
John Dollus
In true AutoDesk fashion, the subscription site only has Max 8 info....Guess we have to wait until 10 to get the 9 information - Ha!
Ernest Burden III
I've got it, tried to activate it with my subscription serial number and that failed... Aren't I supposed to be able to use that number on all our Autodesk stuff? The thing runs in 30day trial mode, doesn't it? Autodesk emailed me (twice) to let me know about the trial being available. It's not exclusively 64bit, is it?
AJLynn
I'm running the trial on XP32, so I know it's got 32-bit, but I don't know if it has 64-bit. Anyway, I'm going to have to stay pretty much in 8 until NL updates the Maxwell plugin, but I've been trying the new mental ray and it seems quite good so far - they've changed a bunch of the things about it that I didn't like, and so far I haven't seen anything from before that they've broken. It looks more like Vray now.
John Dollus
The install should autodetect your OS and install the appropriate 32 or 64 bit version. Both versions should be on the install media. Can anyone confirm this?
Nic H
any plugin probs anyone? Im thinking of installing today! I suppose teh bets way is to just jump in.
Justin Hunt
AFAIK the trial is only 32bit, but the full instillation has both Been playing with the now FG and am pleased with the way it is working. As a said a while ago it looks like they have looked at how Vray and the likes work and implemented their own version. The Arch and Design material is great. Has anyone tried Vray with it yet? Some say that your plugins will have to be recompiled. I suppose that you can just test and see. Have fun JHV
Ernest Burden III
Some say that your plugins will have to be recompiled. I got an email from Cebas telling me they were having to re-compile ALL of their plug-ins for Max9. Of course the only thing I've bought from them is the not-ready-to-go Finalrender2/C4D which is overdue a servicepack. I guess I'll be waiting a bit longer now. But I suppose that says something for where plugins may be with the new Max.
AJLynn
I 've tried some plugins, but nothing I have works. I think all compiled plugins need to be recompiled - fortunately I don't have very many.

martin walker
sounds good....so does the 64 bit make a big difference in performance ? I presume this wont have any impact on rendering performance ( or will it ?)
Koper
would be nice if somebody did some test renders of an exact same scene in 8&9 with a very very high polycount. one could probably just use the scanline and a skylight.
Justin Hunt
I am in the process of doing one. Its an interior that I did a little while ago. The major change I have done is replace the Fakocity light rig for the Physical sky and sun and render with FG. Huge improvment and relativly quick. Once its done I shall post. I tested an exierior one as well, also changed the light right to physical sky and sun with FG. Also very good and quick. The FG is clean and took minutes to calculate with relativly high settings JHV
AJLynn
My first interesting problem with the new mental ray. I brought in the stock Sponza for Max file, added daylight system, changed sun and sky to mental ray. Set FG to low preset with 5 diffuse bounces. Exposure control Logarythmic with daylight flag. Image on the right is with mr physical sky, left is with white background. Now, this looks pretty cool, and potentially useful, but... WTF? Any thoughts? Justin Hunt
Looks like a corrupt mesh, how does it render with scanline? JHV
AJLynn
I figured it out. Since the original Sponza file was for Max3, the camera was not compatible with mental ray. New camera and it rendered fine. Replacing all the materials with the new mental ray material improved the quality dramatically at the cost of some speed (all mats had reflection of some kind). I upped the brightness and contrast on the exposure control and used FG low preset with 5 bounces and 1/16 image sampling.
Justin Hunt
How Long and at what res? Is there much difference between 3 bounces and 5? Very nice indeed JHV
AJLynn
It was 43 minutes at 640x480... this on my Core Duo 2.16... I think it could be more efficient but I don't have any of that figured out yet. 5 bounces gets better propagation to the deeper parts but slows it down quite a bit. I could do a much more basic render at that res with reasonable propagation in a bit under 4 minutes. Anything above 5 bounces becomes prohibitively slow. Here's 3 bounces low, 640x400, this time run on the Core2 Duo 2.84 with the Core Duo 2.16 as a satellite, a bit under 5 minutes.
Justin Hunt
Have you played with the glossy reflection resolution. By the looks of it this could be dialed right down. What is your FG Trace Depth? Instead if increaseing bounces increase the Max trace depth. JHV
