kent
o k now this may be silly, i have looked in the tutorials that come with max and cannot find anything relating to what i am trying to do, i want to know if i have used all the material slots (24) and still need to add more materials how do i go about doing this thanks kent (i have saved the existing materials as complete set in the library)
anvaraziz
start working on multi_sub_object mtl .... u can also reset slots without affecting the object mtl... just press the remove button ( X ) .
David Botofte
i would open a new max app.. make the model with the new material, save it in a folder, and then go back to my original window and the "File -> merge".. this is only a sodo way to do this cuz can't think of other ways to do this..never been in that situation.. :/
kent
Thanks, good idea mental block i guess will start using multi sub object of course kent
kippu
you are not limited to 24 materials per scene, just because if you remove a material from the material editor , does not mean it wont exist in the scene, you can make a new material after you finish 24 and then apply it to some other object and move on...wonder if i made any sense here
Paul Twyman
Yeah you don't have to use Multi/Sub-Objects just pick a material you don't need to edit for a bit and hit the Reset Map/Mtl To Default Settings (X) make sure the effect only in editor is checked or you'll delete it from the scene as well. If you need to edit it later just pick it from the object it's applied to using the Pick Material From Object eyedropper
Respect
You can reset all the slots by going to the Utilities menue in Material editor and choose Reset material editor slots

Ray
Before you reset any material slots or overwrite them w/ new materials, make sure the previous material is applied to something in your scene or you will lose it.
Justin Hunt
better still save it to a library for future use in other projects JHV
drapp@frontiernet.net
Think of the preview windows at the top of the material editor as the crayons you are holding in your hand. You can only fit 24. If you click the Get Material button then the material preview that is selected will be replaced by whatever material you choose in the material library. Viola - that's how it was explained to me by Tim Prinzing and I've been comfy with it ever since.

sudark
i was going to ask the same question. and to revive the topic, what if i just want to have more than 24 slots? why cant max just do that? its simple, and i just like the feeling of having all my materials at once in front of me without going in and out of sub objects.. maybe im just lazy lol
SandmanNinja
Max just can't do that.
BrianKitts
i just like the feeling of having all my materials at once in front of me without going in and out of sub objects.. maybe im just lazy lol If you want to be able to access all your materials at once, just keep the mat/map browser next to your material editor and set it to "scene"
SandmanNinja
Make sure you pick logical, unique names, too (obvious, but just thought I'd say it)
RAYMOND
just curious why do you have an object with 24 materials in it I seldom need more than
Horhe
just curious why do you have an object with 24 materials in it I seldom need more than 10 I guess its not one model - rather an entire scene (cars/grass/diff. glazing/ etc, etc.) Anyhow when making a model with detail one can easily use up more than 24 mats. gfa2
just curious why do you have an object with 24 materials in it I seldom need more than 10 Raymond, have you ever worked with interior designers? I'm working on a model right now that has 82 materials in it.
RAYMOND
yes have done interiors. yes lots of materials.... a lot more than just 10 however i broke it down into subsets that way it was easy to just go to where the changes were i got really tired of scrolling the material editor. my regards tho.... interiors have got to be the most difficult... anyway i may have a different setup too... ray oahu
