As a professional furniture designer, I have found great utility in the following veneers scans for client design communication, specification and 3D rendering.

Wood Library is a set of scanned images of 79 beautiful unfinished wood veneers from the Americas, Europe and Africa. We can photo-realistically render our furniture designs with some of these woods before the piece is physically constructed to test out various types and colors. Those in Italics at right are endangered and/or rare, and we will not use them, but there are sometimes composite and close-species relatives that can achieve a similar look. The endangered species are shown to show what will be missing if we continue as is. Please spread the word, and do not buy or specify these woods at risk.

Key to filenames FC = Flat Cut QTR = Quarter Sawn FIG=Figured

Scanner: HP 4600 scanner

Originals: 16bit, 150dpi, .Tiff Approx. 8.5in x 11in physical.

JPEGs: 8bit, 150dpi, .Tiff Approx. 8.5in x 11in physical.

The scans were color sampled and averaged in 3 places in Photoshop, and compared against Pantone Colorcue 2 (Colorimeter) readings to allow adjustment with curves. The white levels do not go above 230 for realism in reflected brightness.

Elucidesign_Wood_Finishing_Basics.pdf is a primer on how we specify wood finish, and is of use to our clients in unraveling an obtuse technical subject, as well as to the 3D community of renderers and artists.
