Ravendark
Hi there, I've just recieved my upgrade from Max8 to Max9. Looking at the display settings it seems there isn't an OpenGL option anymore. I was under the impression that this was the better option but must confess i don't really know why! I was wondering if anyone could let me know if this is a problem or if using Direct 3D is fine. Thanks in advance.
Abraham
Hi, You can still use OpenGL with Max 9 (either by using the "Change Graphics Mode" icon to start max or by going to the preferences and in the viewport one choosing "Customize -> Preferences -> Viewports -> Choose Driver -> Revert from Direct3D" and then selecting OpenGL. But, unless you have a nice Quadro or Wildcat, you might be well staying with DirectX since most optimization effort for the Viewport in Max 9 targeted Direct X. Hope it helped Ab
Ravendark
That's great, thanks for the reply Abraham. So long as i know it's not a problem and i wouldn't see any real benefit if were to revert then i don't really mind what the setting is. Cheers
Koper
I went to the Autodesk demo for max&maya in Johannesburg last week and there the guy told us that direct3D is the better option for max
landrvr1
I've yet to see D3D work successfully with any version of Max. I'd be very curious to hear what they've done with 9 that makes it any different.
Geoffc
I just installed it last night on my win64 system, and am now wondering whether I should dload and install the Maxtreme drivers. Im using a Quadro 1500. who knows.
AJLynn
Considering the Maxtreme available on nVidia's web site is from January I'd wait for a new release. It probably wouldn't work at all anyway.
Koper
my best bet is to keep it as it is installed, i know that it doesn't give the option of choosing the display drivers when loading for the first time and i think autodesk might be knowing and having reasons for doing this. i think it won't be too long before we will have much more insight regadring this. maybe somebody can do tests for us, showing how the quality of textures are in the viewports, how wire frames are handeled and so on? Geoffc
maybe somebody can do tests for us, showing how the quality of textures are in the viewports, how wire frames are handeled and so on? I have a ridiculously fast woodcrest machine right now with win64, max9 64 and vray rc3 64, but I'm not quite sure how to run helpful tests, being somewhat of a noob in that area. Let me know if I can help and demonstrate with vid drivers, and how.
Geoffc
Considering the Maxtreme available on nVidia's web site is from January I'd wait for a new release. It probably wouldn't work at all anyway. They have a maxtreme 9 out now for max 9, but when installing it on my win64 system, it tells me that it can't find max and then quits. mmowry
I'm running a dual-xeon box at work w/ a quadro 4400 and have never successfully used the maxtreme drivers regardless of the Max version. It has left me wondering what the nvidia folks are really doing over there. Any suggestions? -michael
Superfinicky
Does anyone recommend Nvidia 9800 over the 8800? Anything better out there?
