replacement conroe mobo

Recommended Posts

I've finally determined that my MSI P965Neo is bad and I need to replace it. I tried 3 different sets of memory modules, 2 hard drives, 2 windows installs, 2 video cards, 2 power supplies and I still get about 20 unhandles exceptions/day. Anyone have a good suggestion for a new socket 775 mobo? Something minimal in the $100 range. (it's been demoted to a render slave) I was thinking about the ASUS P5N-SLI. The Intel chipset on the MSI won't allow you to boot a cdrom (something with the J Micron raid controller) very annoying! That's why I lean toward the nforce.

Hmm I can't think of it offhand, but the Asus board with the intel 975 chipset has gotten some good reviews.

I don't think thats sub 100 though =/. I'm not very good at specing out cheap boards, cause I tend to go right for the most expensive ones, usually direct from workstation manufacturers like supermicro or tyan. There is a level of quality in the electronics you just don't get with cheaper priced motherboards, especially in the capacitors.

Ah here it is.

The Asus p5b-e and the p5b deluxe. Neither are sub 100 =/.

I think the Deluxe just adds features, but the only other thing I'd be concerned about is whether the P5B bios development is keeping pace with the Deluxe - one of the things everybody loves about the Deluxe is that the bios options are great for tweakers.

All I can think of....

Its either a run of bad luck...or every single ram dimm or psu is bad. Thats extremely rare to occur, but it can happen. The only thing to do in that situation is phone a friend with known working components to try and diagnose. Very rare though =/.

Things that could be contributing to issues.

1) Actual power going into the computer. Sometimes a poor electrical circuit can wreck havoc on a stable machine. (I'm really grasping at straws from experience here).

2) A bad or damaged power strip.

3) An open case, next to a high EMI disturbance. Same room as a microwave, or giant unshielded speakers.

4) Case with a window " "

5) Some sort of crazy internet issue from a modem or router. Diagnose this by running without the internet or any ethernet plug for a good period of time.
