chuck
I'm looking at 2 different setups, the desktop with intel's 6700, and a laptop with the 7400. I was hoping someone would have some input as far as rendering times go. Is there a desktop chip that the 7400 seems to mirror in rendering times? I'm using Viz2005 with Vray. Thanks, Chuck
AJLynn
The 7400 is the 2.16GHz laptop chip, the 6700 is the 2.66GHz desktop chip. The 6700 is definitely going to be faster. The desktop comparable to the 7400 would be a 6400.
chuck
Thanks for the quick reply, so the two chips (7400 and 6400) are really identical? How much do you think the FSB speeds would change things? I think the desktops are at roughly 1000 vs 667 for the laptops. More questions...do you think the 1333 FSB for the xeons would make a difference? I might just build my own 6700 and OC it...
Greg Hess
FSB makes a difference, but otherwise the chip speeds are nearly identical. You'll mainly be looking at bandwidth differences effecting render times. Thus logically... A 5160 3.0 Xeon 1333 FSB > 3.0 Core2duo 1066 FSB > 3.0 Core2duo mobile 667 FSB Of course these are not massive differences. Maybe 5%.
AJLynn
I don't think they're exactly identical, but I haven't seen tests. They use a different socket, have different FSBs and it looks like the 7400 has 4MB cache and the 6400 has 2mb. I think the 7400 is lower voltage and lower heat. And more expensive. I'd expect the performance to be comparable, until you overclock the 6400 and it beats the crap out of the 7400 (don't overclock laptops).
