Elliot
For several days I have been talking with the dealers to upgrade from Viz 2005 to Max 9. The dealers don't know how to do this cross-upgrade. One dealer just told 10 minutes ago that I have to buy a subscription, buy 3D Max 8 and then upgrade to 3D Max 9. After she added all the prices it came up higher than just buying 3D Max 9 from scratch. Incredible....! Why do I need a subscription....? Is it worth upgrading to 3D Max 9.....? Thanks Elliot
Verma
I work with Autodesk reseller and I'm more than 100% sure that there's no crossgrade available from VIZ 2005 to Max 9. You must be on VIZ 2006 or 2007 to crossgrade to Max 9. So, you can upgrade to VIZ 2007 first and then crossgrade to Max 9 with Subscription. The total price for this path is at least $1000 less than buying a new seat of Max 9. Subscription purchase is REQUIRED for the crossgrade. Elliot
Rahul, Thanks very much for your response. Your explanation is similar to the story she told me. She gave me a price that was higher than just buying the 3DMax from scratch, but she admitted not being sure about what she was doing. She is supposed to call me back. Thanks Elliot
jafs00
I doesn't sound logical... what you need to know is if there are any advantages whatsoever of crossgrading over starting from scratch.
aaron-cds
I just called for myself. I'm thinking of crossgrading from viz 2006 to max 9. I was told it was $1495 plus $440 for the subscription (which I don't have). He said that crossgrading from 2005 would possibly involve the legacy program which would make it $1995 + $440 subscription, although he didn't have anything in writing on that. Hmm, I bought viz 2006 for 2k, another 2k to go to something 10x as fast - not a bad a deal. I just have to convince the wife.
Verma
A new seat of VIZ is $1995 and Max is $3495. With crossgrade option, you only pay the difference between the two, i.e. $1495. Subscription purchase is required for the crossgrade and is highly beneficial to the end users.
Elliot
Aaron and Rahul They came back to me with a written quote, $2,475.00. They force me to upgrade to Viz 2007 $445.00, then the crossgrade $1,495.00 and the subscription $495.00. Plus shipping $40.00 plus taxes 6%. This is very interesting for a program that requires a very powerful computer and that will experience sudden software crashes. My solidworks requires a subscription maintenance fee of $1,200.00 per year and that includes all questions asked plus the yearly upgrade. That's a better deal....! I guess this could be a nice case study on an MBA program. Regards Elliot
TheAllusionisst
I was contacted by Pacificad for a cross grade of $1295 plus subscription for Viz2006 to Max9 but it is only good to the end of the month, FWIW

AJLynn
My solidworks requires a subscription maintenance fee of $1,200.00 per year and that includes all questions asked plus the yearly upgrade. That's a better deal....! Why is that a better deal? The Max subscription does those things, and gives you some extra training material and whatever they randomly decide to release mid-cycle (the 7.5 upgrade was subscription only, so was Pro Booleans for Max8). And for those of us who work for companies, we don't need to convince them to buy upgrades - Autodesk has already done the work of convincing them that subscription is the best thing since Bessemer steel. Elliot
Russell Thanks for the information. I have Viz 2005, not Viz 2006. At any rate thanks very much for the information. You and Rahul have been very informative and helpfull. Aaron, I second the motion. On another note. I took a look at your site..... Excellent images...... Congratulations. Is that really your age? aaron-cds
Thanks Elliot. I'm not really 9, I'm 32. I feel like I'm 9. My son, who's nearly 3, is the reason for that.
TheAllusionisst
Glad if it could help anyone, I thought it was probably a good deal, but I barely get a chance to do much CG and at times feel nickle and dimed to death, don't get me started about MotionBuilder! LOL Anyway, they may not be able to handle orders outside of their territory but it is worth a shot. And yes, Aaron is talented, don't listen to what everybody else says RETRACTION: I was under the impression that he was only 9 when I made the above comment, disregard. P.S. Just joking around folks, Aaron recently had a little fun with me at another site, I am just paying back the favor in a friendly fashion
