gkoumout
hello everyone, so heres my situation: im making a model in VIZ of a school campus. my boss wants me to bring in the topo linework from autocad, she swears there is a way to bring this in and have VIZ basically do all the work. if i have the topographical map of the site, i can bring it into VIZ and somehow that information will be passed on to a plane or something. next, after this is done, she says i can take an aerial map and have the aerial form to the just made topographically accurate surface. this all sounds great but also sounds just too good to be true any questions, comments, concerns...please respond...thanks
lambros
Hi George, greetings from Greece! If I understand well, you will just have to clear the topo autocad model in autocad (and keep just the level curves), and then import the new dwg file in viz (using import->dwg). Then: edit the splines, put each one in the relevant ground level, and either use the surface modifier to get a terrain mesh, or detach all splines to a seperate spline object each, and use the Terrain compound object to form a terrain mesh. This is what I have done in two cases, but if your topo model is large, things can get quite messy and it may take some time.

Then after that you can apply the aerial map to the terrain and you have an accurate 3d model with map but wont look good really close up as its a aerial map but it is very possible
gkoumout
ok so this is embarassing but i am having trouble just bringing in my topo lines. for some reason, viz will only attempt to import them if they are saved as a CAD2000/CAD2000LT file format. even then it is extremely slow and sometimes freezes, causing me to have to ctrl + alt + dlt it. does it matter that the site is over a couple hundred acres? do i need to import smaller sections and piece them together?....i think you get the idea, any advice please...THANKS!!! John Dollus
Make sure you are blocking out your topo lines only and not including unrelated information such as utility lines or even text- only topo lines. Also, check the position of the original autocad topo as it relates to 0,0. Viz/Max can do bad things to imported splines that sit too far from 0,0. From there, if you are still having problems, turn off welding in the autocad import options (you can weld the vertices afterward if required). What is your contour spacing in autocad? 1', 5', 10' ? gkoumout
i have 1' intervals, which i have just recently realized i might only be able to afford 5'...possibly even 10'...ill let ya know how it goes

Size is not an issue if you have enough ram and like what John said make sure its 0,0 I have mapped the whole of New Zealand before imported each grid one at a time and took along time but worked fine Thats if anyone knows what New Zealand is lol and no its not part of Australia
