Jeff Mottle
Calling all 3D architectural designers! If you would like the chance to see your work take shape in a physical form, this is the competition for you. You have the opportunity to have your designs printed by specialist service bureau 3D Reprographics (3DRG). Each prize is a 1/8 scale architectural 3D print, outputted by a Rapid Prototype machine from your digital file. This is your chance to put aside the Popsicle sticks and foam board and leap into the future of architectural modelling! ******************************************************** HOW TO ENTER To enter, simply submit a rendered image or screenshot of one of your architectural designs that you think would make a striking 3D print. Images should be no larger than 1,000x1,000 pixels. The closing date for submissions is 1 March 2007. To submit, create a new thread in this forum with the thread title named with your full first and last name. ******************************************************** The judging panel includes Alexis Rochas, professor at Southern California Institute of Architecture, Kurt Komraus, 3D Coordination Manager for Gehry Partners LLP, and Jeff Mottle, President and Founder of CGarchitect.com. The senders of the three entries that, in the opinion of the judges, display the greatest creativity and technical quality, will each win a 1/8 scale print of their work, worth up to $4,000. Each prize includes international shipping. To qualify for their prize, each winners will need to provide their model as an STL fi le with the specifi cations below. Most 3D software packages have an STL export option, but check the manual for your preferred modelling application. When printed at 1/8 scale, all wall thicknesses should be at least 0.05 inches (1.3mm), and the fi nal size of the print should not exceed 18x18x18 inches (roughly 460x460x460mm). 3dway
Using the example above, am I to assume that the smallest real world dimension which can be printed at 1/8"=1'-0" is 5"? I get this by: 1.3mm printed size x 96 (1/8 scale) = 124.8 mm or 125. So for example if I had a guard around my stairs and landings. I should make the rails 5" dia. and either exclude or upsize the smaller parts? I know some may be upset with me for having this clarified, but I'd rather it be about the model design, rather than relying on people being excluded because of a techincal oversight. 3DRG
True the smallest real world dimension should be restricted to 125mm (approx 5") for this contest. 1.3mm printed size x 96 (1/8 scale) = 124.8 mm or 125 The particular machine we are building the model on has this restriction for this scale. We do have other machines that can print the smaller walls at a higher resolution, but they aren’t the machines we are using for the contest. So if your walls or railings are smaller than 125mm (approx: 5") they will need to be exaggerated for the sake of the model. If anyone has any questions about the file integrity or any other questions, feel free to post them in this forum I will be checking it daily. I look forward to seeing your entries! Geoff
Hello, How do you define 'Architectural designs' ? For example I design staircases, are these eligible to enter? (they are not just normal staircase either) Also, how many designs can I enter? Cool idea for a competition btw. Thanks Geoff
3DRG
By all means submit your design. We've printed many different "architectural designs" everything from phone booths, spiral staircases to bridges. You can enter as many designs as you like, but you can only win one out of the three prizes. I look forward to seeing your designs. Jeff Mottle
Are the results known allready? They were supposed to post the results, but they keep delaying. I'm not sure where they are with the deciding the winner. Last week they asked for the link to this thread, so hopefully they will post soon.
