Mr-JosE
Hi I would like to know how to successfully save out an OpenEXR file from max using version 1.47.03 of vray, that has various G-Buffer channels such as shadows, specular, GI etc. All of my tests so far have failed. I will be atempting to save out a series of animations that will be brought into Shake for compositing, but we have always used tga files, and tweaked them. If anyone knows how i can get this to work correctly i would be very happy indeed! This has been doing my head in for the past couple of days. Cheers
NeonMojo
I have had the same problem, but I was trying to bring them into photoshop and my understanding is that photoshop does not support the other channels besides RGBA in a OpenEXR file. I am not familiar with shake but it could be a similar situation... I would also like to know if anyone has had success with any other program recognizing the other channels of an exr. Roest
Well basically one year later. But i'm also searching for an answer. I found this plugin (http://www.fnordware.com/ProEXR/) for aftereffects and photoshop were they manage different layers. But i still don't understand how to get those different layers in my photoshop file? Is there someone familiar with ProEXR or Openexr?? Help is really appreciated What I've tried is: 1) In Vray --> Save to Vray raw imagefile --> then converted to openexr with all the channels (specular-raw reflection-etc) --> load in photoshop 2) Save as open exr file with all the extra channels --> load in photoshop
dagor
i hope you use latest version of vray. openexr have additional channel, but you can see it only in Nuke software (i may be wrong because i don`t try it myself. i asked my friend about nuke, hi is great composer). ProEXR have all chanell in itself, but it not free. ProEXR is free for After effect ))) Also you must be noticied when working with channel you can`t use color mapping, because your compositing result will be different with you render! you must work only with Linear color mapping - it gives you right result in composition. Photoshop is not good for compositing IMHO, there is not additive blending layer mode. There is only additive merge. Digital fusion is more comfortable. it`s node based software. Don`t know about after effect. I save separate render channel. Not in one EXR file. I dont need it all. I need only some channel for tweaking final image. gfa2
Using the ProExr plugin in Photoshop you can see all of the separate passes. If your not seeing them, then you don't have the plugin installed properly. It's in the documentation that comes with ProExr, you need to replace Photoshop's OpenEXR.8bi with ProExr's ProEXR.8bi file. You can just rename the OpenEXR.8bi to .old or something like that. It's free for 15 days then $95. The version for After Effects is free. Additive blending mode in Photoshop is labeled as Linear Dodge.
Roest
@Dagor and gfa2: Really thanks for the replies! I'm using V-ray 1.50 with linear color mapping. I heard good things about fusion so i will try that someday. About installation; I've replaced the OpenEXR with ProEXR in the plugin map and in photoshop i can see the options of ProEXR in photoshop. And wile i'm typing this message i see i've make one BIG mistake... I don't have CS3 but CS2
dagor
may be i`m wrong, but in photoshop CS or Photoshop CS2 - there were different Linear dodge blending mode. I tested it and it give wrong result in old Photoshop version. I`ve tested CS3 and seams it`s good. Thank for sharing infos!!
gfriedman
can anyone say how to save an exr file from vray as a single unit with all the passes embedded? I have only figured out hot to either save out from the vrb or have these channels pushed out to separate file from the output setting. I want one file...help? Ricardo Eloy
I may be wrong, but probably the best way is to use ceba's PSDManager.
