first, what is "a daylight system" sorry never used it...

second, the omni should replace the default lighting, even if turned off, not sure about the daylight system doing that, are you sure that the default lighting is still on...

and finally you can turn the GLOBAL LIGHTING in the environment dialog to "0"

that will do it for sure...

"Ctrl.+L" puts the default lights in the scene.

You can then select and delete these lights.

For some reason this shortcut is not working on my max 8 copy.

You can also right click on the viewport label, choose configure and uncheck default lights there. Hope it helps.

Manta, Daylight System is found under Create-Systems. It is a combination of Sun and Sky. If you haven't used it, I'd highly recommend giving it a try and do some reading on the user reference, it's very useful especially with Max 9 now supporting Mental Ray Sun and Mental Ray Sky in the Daylight System.

Turn the omni off, or the default off? I already have the daylight system in the scene which should turn off the default, so what would an omni do?

what caffa meant was to place an omni in the scene and turn that omni "off" if you have no lights in your scene then the defualts lights are automatically on. So by putting that one light in there, you have shut off the defualt lights.

But I would assume that the daylight system would do the same thing by having it in your scene (I'm not 100% sure cause I don't use em).

Just my 2 cents here, but I'm going to try and interpret what you're really asking.

When I first attempted lighting in Max I started with the daylight system too and when I rendered it still gave me that "way oversaturated bright" look. Look at your environment settings (shortcut key 8) and make sure you have logarathimic exposure control and exterior daylight checked (only when using scanline).

Hopefully this is the problem. I've never heard of the default lights staying on once you've put another light in the scene...unless of course you're using Vray (which is a whole other issue).

Try the environment settings for now.
