trying something new

Thanks guys. The colors (I like) but they are secondary. I was actually trying to copy something else but when I tried to copy it I ended up making it look completly different.

No not sketch up a rather invovled process involving vray toon, the new vray color maps creating a fake HDRI and a bit of PS work.

This is a sample detail straight from max.

it's definitely interesting, but those dashed lines are killing the "hand-made" feel. I think you need to have more delicate lineweights too.

I agree that the colors are probably too saturated, and I'd really like to see it with more subtle colors.

great potential though. care to elaborate on that color map and fake hdri? (not that I have vray to test myself, but the provess sounds interesting)

Good point about the lineweights. I will look into playing with that.

How I got this in max was using an override material that had a sharp falloff set to shade/lit for diffuse. In the shadow slot of the fallow I used a "hatch" pattern to give the shadow some texture. Then I used vray toon to render with a texture as the line but I could scale that to affect the lineweight.

Vray color is a map that uses the same intensity (numbers) as an HDR image I used these colors as the flags in a gradient ramp and set that to the environment map. The colors could be anything. I also used the map as an image in a vray dome but it took longer to render.
