Recommended Posts

Broken down into the bare basics:

1. Add a skylight to your scene (and of course set the renderer to mental ray).

2. Put your hdri in the map slot of the skylight or in your environment map slot. If you do put the hdri in the scene environment and not directly in the skylight then you'll need to set the skylight to "use scene environment". (and don't forget to set the correct mapping type for your hdri map: spherical, etc.)

3. Enable FG

4. Render.
