i'm running 1 gig on a dual xeon and dont often use it all.

Last summer when I was rendering my animation from hell on Cinema, it got heavy enough that it would only render on my laptop since it has 2GB (though two cores) and wouldn't render on my other PCs with 1.5GB RAM. Later I spent most of a week optimizing the file so it would render faster and on the 1.5GB machines. So you can hit that ceiling with too little RAM.

if your talking about the quad cores. I can get a dual core intel system (non xeon) for $500. and I can get a duel-quad core xeon system(8 processors) for $3500.00 to $4k I am still better off. its cheaper in the long run. and only 1 OS to worry about.

I've talked to a person who already has one and says that the quads are insanely fast. I'm just waiting for some realworld benchmarks..

Also--how does C4D treat a dual CPU? I know a dual-core just spawns two renderlines. But will two CPUs (or four) need NetRender to use? That would be a big drawback. FinalRender2 simply generates more buckets.

I believe that C4D is still able to use up to 16 CPUs at once. It did back in v5 days on Alpha chips.

I've just bought today QX6700 extreme dual core. I could not wait any longer, what i know is that with this chip it is not possible to put 2 in the same motherboard. There is a xeon quadcore which should be released soon, then you'll be able to add them 2 by 2 !!!

Even with the QX6700, I'll be quite happy, it scored 16 to the last cinebench as my current config with 2 opterons270 scores 24. I suppose that in DR, I should get good results.

News in 2 weeks, when I'll receive it!

Go UCLA.

You can't put 2 "Core" chips on one board - that requires Xeons. Also, Cinebench isn't incredibly efficient with a lot of CPUs - 16 (this is multi-CPU in seconds, yes?) would be about right, but if it were as efficient handling 4 CPUs as it is with 2 it would be more like 12-13. The multi-CPU speedup with 2 cores is usually 1.85, but with 4 it's only about 3, and with 8 it's around 5. Maybe if you're using something in a Vray or mental ray it would be better.

all this technical talk is making me ill. i no understand. this is my situation -

my boss is happy to spend on 2 nice new render engines for me. we're looking at quad xeons, but at this point in time they cost an arm and a leg.

can i even buy daul duals then? whats the equivalent of a quad core? (ie, 4 processors in one pc)?

with these answers, please consider my poor aching head ;)

Well here's the situation...

You can buy a dual-dual xeon system, and later on when the quad xeons go down in price, just put those into your current motherboard, (they should be compatible with the dual-dual motherboard)

or

Just buy the quad-core xeons now (2 quad core xeons=8 cpu's)

The question is...whether or not it will be any cheaper. i.e. paying for the dual-cores + the reduced price of the quad-cores later, is it going to be any less than paying full price for the quad-cores right now...because if its not going to be less money, then you can utilize the power of 8 right now...

Base price dual dual machine, $2297 , base dual quad machine $3071.. I would add more ram, and getting the fastest dual quad wasn't the point, yes that one would be $1300 difference from its dual dual comparison.

Of course I would add more ram, etc. but just getting a dual quad isn't that more expensive.
