trees along a spline

I have about 300 trees(cross billboards) that i need to "plant" 40 feet apart along side of a road that curves, and changes z height.. I have a single spline for the trees to be planted but not sure how to get the trees attached to the spline and spaced every 40 ft.

spacing tool in Max

 

Set up one billboard (materials, pivot point at bottom center) then hit Shift+I to pull up the spacing tool.

 

You have all kinds of options there.
