I guess it doesn't matter because I'm just experimenting but doesn't DOF blur in front of and behind the object in focus by default?

No. The fstop creates a range that is in focus. These are graphically represented in the vray camera by planes like the clipping planes in max's camera. The larger the fstop number the greater the range in view. The smaller the number the narrower the focal range.

Vray camera seemd to be only for people who are pretty familiar with a realworld camera. Seems like there are many situations in arch viz work where a stardard camera would be better and a bit more simple. I am also thinking about not using the vray sky but using vray colors in a gradient ramp. That way I can have a sky that doesn't look like a vray sky and have a bit more control. Then just lower the sun to .1 and you are ready to roll.

This image has a f stop of 1 (16 is typical for exterior work/infinity). Film speed is 10 :) and shutter is 800.

I'll just stick with the standard camera. I'm not sure I understand the benefits of the vray camera anyway. Thanks for the help.

The benefit of the physical camera is that it will base the DOF effect based on real world settings. By using the old method, people often create DOF effect that are not technically possible at the scale of the real world. So often, things look like minitures. If you want to have a strong DOF, use a very lot f-stop 1.8 or so, and have a long focal length, 100mm or so.
